I'm trying to measure diagonal distance between two points, and I can't figure out how to calculate it properly. I am trying to figure out how to position KB during my Turn 1, but PH is around 79 diagonal, meandering hexes from the starting position of KB... and if I use Pythagorean to solve horizontal vs. vertical, I end up with 73 hexes based on going East for 52 hexes and then going South for 52 hexes.

How do you calculate it it? Thanks. :)

And first-move bonus is only 36 hexes... so how does that happen in the historical scenario? Even using the "Target Pearl Harbor Airfield" button on KB's aircraft settings shows a distance of (80).

Way back in time, before the planet cooled, a guy figured out how to do it and wrote a small program to do it when everything was done on cardboard-based games.  So, google "meaningless odd programs from 1975" and it may turn up.

Where did you get 36 hexes from? One person sent part of KB to San Diego for the first turn.

It's not a daft question at all! I couldn't figure it out for the longest time, until I happened to stumble upon it non-abbreviated by chance... it's Kidou Butai, the IJN "Mobile Force" of carriers. ;)

Edit: But I haven't yet figured out what makes up "baby KB" or "mini-KB" as people like to call it...

KB is as mentioned the Kido Butai / Mobile Force of the IJN. The big six fleet carriers at the start of the war (Zuikaku, Shokaku, Hiryu, Soryu, Kaga, Akagi).
Mini- or Baby-KB is the CVLs and CVEs that most players group together in the first few days/weeks of the game to support operations in the DEI (Zuiho, Shoho, Hosho, Ryujo). Later the Junyo and Hiyo, the slow large carriers are sometimes added to the CVLs.

Best way:

Choose an air group in the starting hex.
set it to recon.
now,
You can select a target. Moving over map You will see a range in a small black box on the main screen.

Way back there was a wargame company called Avalon Hill.

Avalon Hill had a magazine (monthly) with many interesting articles about hex-based wargames.

When I finally find it, and I will, there was an article in the 1970's in the issue about Jutland that actually showed how to calculate the number of hexes along a line of sight. When I find it I'll scan it and inform the bunch here. Won't be before March/April, though, sorry.

Here's a calculator. I did it using Open Office (which is free) but it should open in somewhat recent versions of Excel too.

The attachment is really a .zip file, just rename it and extract the contents.

Previous attachment was wrong - the formulas available are mostly for hexes numbered along different axes than WITP (along straight hex rows - WITP has X-axis along a hex row by Y-axis is at 90 degrees to it and therefore sort of wiggles up and down).

This version is modified (again thanks to info on the websites mentioned earlier) to account for the way WITP hexes are numbered.

The attachment is a .zip file, just rename it to remove the .txt extension.

Hmm, none of the calculations are occurring when I add coordinates to the spreadsheet (using Excel 2007). I have added coordinates to every possible location on the spreadsheet, and no calculations occur. ;*(

I haven't got Excel 2007, so I can't troubleshoot that for you. Unnamed big company (that makes Excel 2007) has been accused of sometimes making open file formats difficult to work with in their software.

Open Office is free and is maintained by Sun Microsystems. Look at openoffice.org for the download (it's big!).

I made the columns where you enter the hex coordinates yellow to help make it clear. Here is a sample of what I see when I have it open:
