Hi everybody!

Would like to share smoe thoughts with you about pilot management! Perhaps you could share your own ideas to this topic ...

I have expirienced that you can put pilots into Group Reserve and into General Reserve past that. This is what i do on Turn one (playing as the Japanese) with all the pilots exp > 50 in Japan, Manchukuo and to some part in China. These are the pilots who will replace the initial losses, especially those from my carrier force.
I found out that pilots exp > 80 (those yellow one veterans) can only be put into TRACOM, putting them into group reseve prior.
I have to say i never put these pilots into TRACOM, speeding up pilot production a little bit just not justifices sendign so many good pilots (and there are not that much) in to TRACOM.
I prefer doing following: I put thos pilots into group reserve and transfer them to my squadrons set to training (one per squadron) i defined in Japan and Manchukuo (those Units that are fixed and can't even be bought out with PP). I actually don't know how much a veteran pilot really speeds up pilot training but i think it's better than to keep them at TRACOM. Does it help to speed up training with more of those present? Dont't know ...

I must admitt that i find it difficult sometimes to keep track of my pilots (sending them to General Reserve, from general Reserve to a Unit etc.). Sometimes they show up in the pilot screen (with their due days) and sometimes not. Beiing a newbie with WitP Tracker, is there a possibility to keep track of those pilots "travelling"?

Please excuse my bad English, since it's not my mother language (coming from the small but beautiful country of Austria [:)].

Regards!

Your English is better than most native speakers I know.  And a whole lot better than their German, I'll bet.  [:D]

Sorry.  I can't help with your question.

Hello from Vienna!

Sadly I can't really comment on pilot management since I'm just starting to play WitPAE in earnest but am due to find out in a PBEM. :) I'll be posting an AAR thread covering the allied side hopefully this evening, so you're very welcome to participate there! I'll take a look at the allied side of piloting.

To be honest, I haven't really messed with the pilots at all yet, and WitP didn't have the functionality I think. My memory isn't what it used to be, hehe.

Not really, but the next iteration of Tracker might make this easier ...

Can I add a question to your thread? I hope that was a yes...LOL...[:D] My question to pilot management is; Does each branch has it own reserve groups, or do all pilots go into a army/navy reserve?

Each nationality has its own pools (including reserve). USA, USN and USMC are three different 'nationalities' in this regard. As is the IJN and IJA. But as you can see pilot management is much more complex for the allies as they have to handle far more nationalities (10 I believe plus the soviets).

CapAndGown -> RE: Pilot Management (1/29/2010 12:04:09 AM)

My suggestion would be not to send them into group reserve, but send them into general reserve. Then, everytime you request a veteran, all you have to do is toggle over to general reserve and pick an appropriate pilot.

Also, in your training scheme, do not be too quick to put pilots into the reserve. If you have not had a heavy draw on a particular type of pilot (say a bomber type pilot) you can spend the extra time in training giving them an extra skill set. My suggestions would be:

Patrol Pilots: Primary training - Naval Search; Secondary training - ASW
Recon Pilots: Primary training - Recon; Secondary training - Naval Search
IJA Bomber Pilots: Primary training - Airfield/Ground/Port attack (doesn't matter which you pick); Secondary Training - Naval attack; Tertiary training - Naval Search; Quatranary (word?) training - Naval Search
IJN Bomber Pilots: Primary training - Naval attack; Secondary training - Could be either Search (for Betty/Nell pilots) or ASW (for Kate/Val pilots)

Fighter pilots really have only one mission to train for: Escort (or Sweep, makes no difference)

foliveti -> RE: Pilot Management (1/29/2010 1:09:14 AM)

On the fighter pilots, if you set the altitude to 100 feet, they will train for strafing also.

jb123 -> RE: Pilot Management (1/29/2010 2:43:29 AM)

Here is what I am doing as allies. Lots of critique would be nice:

I also am not using TRACOM. If I get a lot of 80+ pilots I may start putting them in in groups of ten. As of now (apr 42) I have about five in TRACOM. When the three provisional squadrons of P-40s showed up in Oz with 30 exp. I ran a little test to check the high exp pilots. I put one 80+ pilot in one group, two in the second, and none in the last. I gave each group a similar leader, 50-ish leadership points (there are many bad leaders).

I was not scientific in the test, but it did seem that the group with two 80+ pilots gained exp the fastest. Still, by the time they disbanded, they were only around 35 exp. But... they had high air exp, sixty-ish.

So, my goal is this: Australian pilots' primary mission is ASW. So all those 18 plane wirraway squadrons go to inland bases, get maxed out with "boot" pilots" and start a regime: 1 Month general training; 1 Month Naval search; 1 Month ASW; 1 Month Naval Bombing. All at 90%, I've not had any problems with fatigue or moral, I just let them rest till moral is at 100 and fat at 0. They finish this regime right about the time the Hudson III with radar is available. I then upgrade the wirraways to the better plane and cover the entire coast with ASW groups.

Some of these squadrons go to Sydney and Melbourne and go 40% ASW 50% training and 10% percent rest. I haven't been able to tell if these groups gain experience faster than the units simply training.

The less than 18 squadrons train naval attack and ground bomb for the beaufort upgrades.

On the west coast, all those lancers at portland train at 80%. I try to have enough surviving mohawks as well to fill out all 80 planes with lancers and mos with a buffer of one or two in reserve for those green pilots' inevitable ops losses. They have a similar regime, 1 month gen train, 1 month escort train, 1 month strafing train. They each get one 80+ exp pilot. They get leaders with low aggresion but high leadership in hopes they gain points quicker, while I free up high aggression leaders for fighter sweeps. Once the three month regime is over I send the 55-ish pilots into the pool to get combat experience on the front. If i have more time I give them a bit more escort training.

Similarly surving buffaloes get a brit squadron at dehli or something. 16 planes with 24 pilots on constant training.

Lots of micromanagement, but all of my front line groups have decent pilots.

The biggest annoyance with all of this is the disappearing pilot bug or whatever it is. When you click on 15 pilots to get sent to your group only 2 or three show up on the list. This cause me to usually overdraw and then have micromange twice as much.

Please tell us what you guys do.

Hi jb123!

Thx for sharing your expirience with pilot management. Guess there's no difference between japanese or allied pilot training so picking up your point with the more veterans > 80 the faster the progress seems to be.
You seems to have the same problems like me managing your pilot draws (only some pilots showing in the Pilot-Screen) ... perhaps as n01487477 posted, it's going to be treated in one of the next releases of WitP Tracker ... would be really helpfull otherwise you can't keep track of your travelling pilots (must admitt i keep track writing it down in an excel-file on my laptop [:)]) just to see if the pilots just vanished ...

Hello from Klagenfurt :-)

Of coure i will stay tuned to your AAR, like reading those cause nothing else can give you such a good sight withing game mechanics and tactics!

I think good pilot management can really give you a boost (even if it's just a psycological effect), especially for the japanese and their precious carrier pilots. Good pilots just don't help you sitting in Manchuria or Japan withing their fixed units!

I must admitt that i'm not able to draw a 80+ pilot to general reserve ... klicking on a 80+ pilot first toggles the group reserve, klicking a second time toggles the TRACOM ... perhaps i'm doing something wrong ... with pilots 80- everything runs fine with the general reserve ...

Your suggestions with the training in extra skills is very good ... especially for search/asw skills i would think!

CapAndGown -> RE: Pilot Management (1/29/2010 10:52:25 AM)

Send the 80+ pilots to TRACOM, since they can't go to general reserve. TRACOM can serve as your "general reserve" for these pilots. While there they can perhaps do some good, but you can pull them back out at any time.

Ah i always thought put them into and back again from TRACOM would need such a long time ... but if it's same same amount like pulling the pilots in and out from general reserve then of course!
Myself always thought it would be better speeding the training from my on-map units as long as i have quite a lot trained pilots in the pilot pool ...
