robotechjb -> ASW TF's (1/29/2010 3:32:44 AM)

Playing as Allies, I have set up ASW TF's to patrol off Austraila and the West Coast. They seem useless except that they provide the jap subs with more targets to sink. Have yet to sink even one enemy sub (even with most of my airpower set to ASW at an altitude of 100ft).

Am I doing something wrong here? What is the most effective use of ASW TF's? What is the best way to deal with the Japanese subs off my coast?

Thanks

100 ft seems too low. Try 2,000 to 6,000 ft. In game, 6,000 ft is said to be the optimal altitude to spot things. 2,000 ft is said by some players to increase the number of ASW attacks they get.

Do a lot of naval search. If the detection levels on the subs are higher, the ASW groups have a better chance to attack them (and give your 'targets' a better chance to avoid them).

Early on, your goal is to keep the enemy subs from sinking your ships. Later on Allies get better ASW tools, then you can start actually sinking enemy subs.

Also remember to set your ASW TF to react enemy, for example range of 2 or 3. So in theory search planes spot the sub, and ASW TF reacts to that hex. It might even work sometimes...

Also, have you installed all the patches ? In one of the hotfixes the chance that ASW forces were hit was reduced.

I'd set ASW air units at a mix of 1k or 2k feet (100' is definitely too low) and use slow-flying assets, like float planes or stringbags.  For naval search 5k-6k seems to be about the ideal height, OK if you fly higher in theory you will see more (because of the curviture of the earth) but have less chance of spotting it because it's further away.  Also some planes on naval search will drop the odd bomb (purely to mark the spotted ship or subs position, of course) regardless before the ASW units arrive

ASW do not have to be slow , i just hit a jap sub with an A20 (reportedly anyway.. ) i had however trained them for 40 odd days at ASW training 100% and damn the crashes [;)].. skills over 40+ help , and im sure even higher helps more..

as already stated search search and search .. ASW groups on react with agressive commanders with a high naval skill. eventually they will get better and start attacking but be patient as it takes AGES for poor crews (i.e AM's ) to get better.

robotechjb -> RE: ASW TF's (1/30/2010 3:51:22 AM)

Thanks all. I will move the altitude up a bit and set more searches.

Remember that Naval skill of your ASW TF CO is VERY important when hunting subs. It is often beneficial to appoint dedicated TF leader instead of relying to default leader. Look for Naval skill  > 60.

Good point on training your pilots for ASW! I think many players neglect to spend time to do that. So, 40+ seems to be the thresh hold for good results on ASW eh. I was wondering about how far I needed to go in the ASW training department. Has anyone found that certain types of planes are better at ASW than others speaking from the Japanese point of view here? :-)

dasboot1960 -> RE: ASW TF's (1/31/2010 3:48:38 PM)

I've adopted the approach that action is the best training. My planes don't seem to hit much anyway, so I set ASW mission, but allocate 80 search/20 training (for the range). Everything except DDs that has ASW mission allowable forms up 2-4 per group and is set to 'patrol around" I actively procecute asw contacts during my turn (allied) the nearest task forces gets redirected to patrol around the contact. Max react ranges. I'm in mid-march PBM, and IJ is down 8-12 subs, FOW dependent. We've patched twice, and my effectiveness seems to have fallen off lately, but I'm just not seeing a lot of subs anyway. (Make of this what you will trueknight)

Nomad -> RE: ASW TF's (1/31/2010 5:48:23 PM)

What I found the best in WitP and should be the same in AE, is that aircraft that carry more bombs seemed to be more effective at ASW. Probably more chances for hits.

wwengr -> RE: ASW TF's (1/31/2010 7:24:39 PM)

To summarize from here and other threads: Ideal ASW TF Operation includes TF operatiing under search arc of an Airgroup on Naval Search and an Airgroup on ASW

  • ASW TF

    • 2 - 4 Ships with ASW capability
    • TF Commander is appointed (not a ship captain)
    • TF Commander with Surface Skill > 60
    • No Ship Captains with poor surface skill
    • Flagship has high speed, high ASW rating, high experience day/night (note - A small craft ASW TF does best when it has a DD or an experienced, well lead, and well armed DM, DMS, AVD, or DE as the flagship when possible)

  • Airgroup(s) on Naval Search

    • 6,000 ft
    • Airgroup Commander has reasonably good Inspiration (keeps morale up and planes flying)

  • Airgroup(s) on ASW Patrol

    • 2,000 ft
    • Aircraft that carry heavier bomb loads
    • Airgroup Commander has reasonably good Inspiration (keeps morale up and planes flying)

Run your ASW ops in and around Choke Points where your convoys have to go. Use Waypoints to vary routings in the wide open spaces and use ASW Airgroups on patrol to detect in those areas

Remember... The principle objective of ASW patrol is to keep the enemy submarines from killing your ships. If, while doing that, you can sink enemy submarines then all the better!

wwengr -> RE: ASW TF's (1/31/2010 7:38:00 PM)

Of course that is the ideal situation. Get as many of those factors working together as possible. If all you have is two minesweepers and a small group of Catalina's, then give the Minesweepers a good TF commander and coordinate their efforts with the Catalina's on search.

Good results ? no .. the v v occasional attack so they improve in combat. prior to this setting them on ASW does nothing as far as i can tell. as a follow on even when operating ASW air groups i tend to use 50-60% ASW 20% train (for the slow ones) and rest on 'rest' to keep fatigue generally below 10-15.

and TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN as has been mentioned before !
