bruin -> Extreme fog of war? (2/1/2010 6:18:38 AM)

Was this intended - reading over my combat reports, there was no air to air action listed at all. However, according to intelligence report Japan had 19 A2A losses, I (allied) had 1. According to my ops report, a whole lot of kills were credited.

Playing against the AI, using patch 2 hotfix 2, about to upgrade to hotfix 3 but didn't see anything about missing combat reports. Going to post the AARs in this thread, so it'll get a little long.

Cuttlefish -> RE: Extreme fog of war? (2/1/2010 7:01:53 AM)

Check your ops report for the turn and see if there is any mention about "Transports flying to X intercepted." This occurs during the air transport phase and can trigger air-to-air battles, all of which occur offscreen. In my experience, at least, this is the most likely cause of otherwise unexplained air losses. In this case I would guess your forces bounced an air transport mission and its escorts and wreaked havoc. You kind of have to infer what happened from the available evidence.

If there is no evidence of anything like that in the ops report then I'm clueless.

Ground combat at Changsha (82,52)

(cut off here to save space, but everything after is ground combat).

Agree re: the likelihood of air to air transport intercept here. Only other thing I can think of is recon intercept, but that's less likely in such numbers.

More information would be helpful. Where are those two FS that saw all the action based? What type of aircraft was claimed to have been shot down in droves-was it a transport aircraft type? Were those FS LRCAPing a nearby hex to intercept incoming transport aircraft? This will help unravel the mystery.

topeverest -> RE: Extreme fog of war? (2/1/2010 5:04:13 PM)

FOW does remove certain combats and distorts others. It also can create fake ones. You will need to verify losses through the registers each and every turn. It always is a good idea to validate the combats occured by reviewing the units involved, and if you didnt get a repoprt, find the units that did take the losses. Uploading WITP Tracker can alleviate some of this uncertainty by reviewing the information in there. Look for it in the forum main page

Trust me, this will be a constant source of consternation, but it is in fact part of the realism of not having perfect information. You have to use your best judgement on what you believe until you get a feel for what just seems too good or too bad to be true. Just put that into your turn mechanics

erstad -> RE: Extreme fog of war? (2/2/2010 5:30:46 AM)

I've seen air losses due to both sides having CAP in the same hex (one with CAP, one with LRCAP). There isn't a combat report for this but they apparently can tangle with each other.

bruin -> RE: Extreme fog of war? (2/2/2010 6:59:02 AM)

Aircraft A2A losses:

Sonia - 7
Betty - 7
Zero - 6
Oscar - 1
Jake - 1
Hurricane IIb - 1

Oddly enough according to this total Japanese A2A losses counts up as 21, but the intelligence summary states 19.

From what I see the following units were involved, and here is where they were based:
8th FG/36th FS (P-40E) - Merak (1 kill)
49th FG/9th FS (P-40K)- Batavia (8 kills)
35th FG/40th FS (P-39D)- Koepang (5 kills)
49th FG/7th FS (P-38F) - Batavia (1 kill)
8th FG/80th FS (P-40E) - Tjilatjap (1 kill)

And of course my ops report shows only 16 kills.

It's Oct '42 and I still own all of Java, but all the surrounding areas are captured. Enemy units are at Merak and Soerabaja. I own Koepang but the rest of Timor is Japanese. I am running no LRCaps, only regular cap. I can see that the Zero and Oscar kills may have come from the Japanese running LRCap over Merak from Oosthaven. But the other 14 I can't see coming from transport (where would they be transporting to?) You think I got 14 bomber kills from the enemy running recon or search missions? Nothing listed in the ops report I missed I don't think, here is the full ops report.

I wish the IJN got a few of those coastwatcher reports........

I've seen so many ships listed as sunk and then taken off of it that I only consider them really sunk if one of my ships gets to watch them go under.  So far that includes the bulk of the IJN CV's; two of them sunk off of Brisbane, two sunk by surface action, Kaga sunk by 3 S-boats, and a couple others sunk near Guadalcanal.  Yamato has been on and off the list, as was Nagato and I think Shokaku.  Nagato raided PH in early '42 and sank several TF's in the area, but when I sent a 3 CV TF after her she ran like a whipped dog, taking DB hits all the way past Palmyra before she got away.
