Curious what other players do as Allies with reinforcing and building up Hawaii. Are the land units there at the start enough, or do you send in reinforcements. There seems to be plenty of support, particularly at PH, but what do you do to reinforce the outlying bases? It would be nice to get both human and AI takes on this, though I don't know how likely a PH attack is vs. AI on the historical setting. Anyway, thanks in advance for your thoughts. Sorry if this is covered in an earlier post, I didn't dig back too far.

I use Pearl Harbor as a hub base; nearly every unit or plane destined for CentPac or SoPac comes through there first.  I ship a few combat units to Pago Pago/Suva directly from the WC, but the ones I want to send to Midway, Palmyra or other nearby islands go to Pearl first.  Then I send them to their destination via smaller ships so they can dock at the smaller ports.  I also send supply/fuel from Pearl to the CentPac/SoPac/SWPac major bases, and use smaller TF's to distribute fuel/supply from them.

Pearl Harbor is impervious to direct Japanese amphibious assult in the first month of a historical war scenario. It would take the bulk of the available jap invasion forces to have a realistic chance at taking the base and come at a great opportunity cost. That said, there is a scenario that could succeed. The most likely scenario requires taking Midway, Johnston or a line island as an intermediate base to move planes and short range ships through. At the same time, a combined naval and amphibious attack would probably target one or more of the other Hawaian islands. From there, it would be an attempt to knock out the base and port at Pearl, making it unusable - using the bulk of the available Jap carriers and a goodly portion of its air squadrens to control the skies and seas. Even in this case, there is no guarantees for the Japanese, since the base has large amounts of supply already, and likely will get more before invasion could happen.

The way the american player subverts this possibility if you think it will happen is to resupply Pearl harbor as much as possible as quickly as possible, prioritize as many AA, CD, and ART units as possible to the base, man nearby bases with patrol planes, use your replacements to upgrade fighters at Pearl first, remix the base planes by moving more naval attack aircraft to the base, and have the bulk of the American Fleet available to counter any incursion.

Within a month, it will be the battle the Allies want to fight if it happens.

I agree with prior comments to use PH as a hub for supple, fuel, and reinforcements after that.

In human games, the Japs are likely to keep a permanent sub presence outside Pearl and the West Coast to keep you on your toes as you transport, but this is merely a nuisance, once you figure out how to beat them.

After I repair the damage at Pearl, I put the engineers to work maxing out Port and then maxing out the fortifications. I don't use the nearby bases extensively enough to do much building

I have one search plane squadron at Molokai and another at Hilo to provide even more coverage around the islands.  In my CG the AI sent a BB TF to just a few hexes west of Oahu to intercept TF's headed to SoPac, and made it there even though I had several squadrons from Pearl flying search missions.  With multiple bases flying patrols, ISTM that the subs and other surface ships get picked up faster now.

Thanks for the responses. I'm curious if any other players use different strategies. How much do you reinforce the outlying bases in the HI w/ units, if at all? How much AV do you try to concentrate at Pearl, and at the other bases, at least in the first 3-6 months? After 6 months, it becomes moot unless the Japanese are really mopping up the Pacific with your fleeing forces, but what long-term strategies do you use to build up Pearl and the other bases? I don't know if many games have gotten to '44 or '45, but if so some long-term perspective would also be appreciated. Thanks!
