mgoldstein -> How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/4/2010 6:37:53 PM)

Trying to build up the strafing skill of some Wirraway pilots in anticipation of the group converting to Boomerangs, but setting the training altitude to 100 ft. isn't working. I've tried several attack options and even "General Training" at 100 ft., but nothing improves strafing. Is there some combination I'm missing or is this a bug?

Ground attack at 100ft?

mgoldstein -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/4/2010 9:50:01 PM)

Tried training for ground attack at 100 ft. It improved low ground skill, but not strafing.

themetalcrow -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/4/2010 10:09:02 PM)

i didn't know bombers did strafing runs.  do you know what a strafe is?  are you thinking of carpet bombing?

mgoldstein -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/4/2010 10:19:51 PM)

Send your bombers in at 100 ft. and they will strafe as well as bomb. This is how bombers like the A-20G and B-25G/H/J were used historically. Massive forward firing gun armaments were specifically added for this purpose. With bombers like these it is desirable to improve your pilots' strafing skill.

themetalcrow -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/4/2010 10:21:34 PM)

that's news to me.  i was unaware heavy bombers did strafing at all in reality.  i could see the AC-130 as the first gunship "strafing"  but not ww2 heavy bombers.   i thought bombers were just too slow to strafe

tbridges -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/5/2010 1:46:01 AM)

The way you set a fighter group to strafe at 100 feet is to set it for "Sweep" and then set the altitude to 100 ft. I would presume you would have to set a bomber the same way, but I don't think you can even set a bomber to "Sweep" at all.

mgoldstein -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/5/2010 1:49:00 AM)

Correct, you can't set a bomber to sweep. I believe it's an oversight in the pilot training system.

jb123 -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/5/2010 2:18:28 AM)

my fighters train for "strafe" when set at ground attack, 100 feet. bombers train for for "low ground" when given same settings. not sure what the difference is.

mgoldstein -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/5/2010 11:06:56 PM)

Yes, exactly. So how do you train bomber pilots to improve their strafing skill? It seems like a bug, as there are certainly certain types of bombers intended to be used as low-level strafers.

jb123 -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/6/2010 1:34:30 AM)

Anyone have an answer on this? devs? I'd really like to use the big guns of some later bombers and I'd like to start training some pilots to use 'em.

I guess the question is: what is the difference between low ground and strafe? will bombers with a huge gun rating strafe? or will they make a "low ground attack" that is as good as strafing (i.e., uses the guns)

Thanks

Halsey -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/6/2010 8:43:52 PM)

Train at 100' ground, or naval attack.

This gives the straffing skill, for bombers.

mgoldstein -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/9/2010 6:52:18 PM)

This does not work for me under the 1.00.95 patch. Bombers training at 100 feet improve Low Ground or Low Naval, but not Strafing. Again, am I missing something or is this a bug?

freeboy -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/9/2010 7:40:05 PM)

ok, I know this is going to sound hinky, BUT the best way I found t otrain is to leave an enemy base that you use as practice.. then go at it!

Halsey -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/9/2010 8:57:57 PM)

Could be a bug.

Try general training at 100' and see if you get any results.

tbridges -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/9/2010 11:44:19 PM)

I think you're right, Marc, its not actually a bug - its an oversight in the training code.

youīre better off to just bomb with your bombers as the hits from strafing just donīt do any significant damage while you take a lot of flak... itīs somewhat screwed IMO because the same guns (20mm cannons or cal.50 MGs can shoot up targets quite well when used in a naval engagement).

this is true, doing bombing runs is still the best way to train bomber crews. Good thing we canīt train fighter pilots doing bombing runs on empty bases anymore though. [:D]

Training for straffing worked before the patch.

From a practical standpoint, you are probably right, Castor. But as you might guess, I'm a strafing fanboy, and I have seen good results from properly trained units. I agree with your point about the effectiveness of strafing attacks, but that's another battle. For the moment, I'd just like to be able to train my pilots. It seems like an easy fix; training for ground attacks at 100 feet should improve strafing, while attacks between 1000 and 5000 feet should improve low-level bombing.

Oliver Heindorf -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/10/2010 7:00:41 PM)

just curious : is there a reason why this thread is plastered with pics filling the screen but without any usage to the threadstarter at all ? nor answering the question [&:]

mgoldstein -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/10/2010 7:08:07 PM)

I (the thread starter) posted the pics for fun and to illustrate my point that bombers were made to perform strafing attacks. The feedback I've heard reinforces my feeling that this is a genuine bug in the pilot training mechanics, which I'd love to see repaired in a future patch release.

Pascal_slith -> RE: How do you train bombers for strafing? (2/14/2010 7:24:41 PM)

For the Wirraways, the first thing is to change the database and make the FB's instead of level bombers...
