Gustaf -> Refueling questions (7/6/2002 5:24:36 AM)

Could someone please explain to me exactly how to refuel a combat TF at sea with a replenishment TF that has been ordered to follow? I sent a CV TF on a patrol/do not retire mission and at the same time had an AO TF leave port to follow the CV TF. The AO TF was set to Replenishment. The CV TF got beat up enough for the AI to overrule the patrol/do not retire order and the CV TF turned tail and headed for home. In doing so it passed right by the following AO TF without refueling from it.

I've tried the manual a number of times but I seem to be missing the explanation on how exactly the two TF's meet up to refuel.

Thanks! :)

Hi Gustaf,
I'm assuming your problem has to do with the "no midpoint" issue mentioned in numerous other threads. This problem means that TFs will only perform their missions when at the end-point of their movement. If your CVs passed though the replenishment TF and into another hex beyond the latter's range, you'll have to wait for the oiler to catch up and then refuel. If you're concerned about continuous fueling, and not in a big hurry, you can order the CV TF to follow the oiler instead of the other way around. This, however, is risky and slow. If your carriers are in rough shape, you might have to countermand the AI's impulse to set them scampering home and set a destination within the oiler's range. Good luck.

Thanks Blitz... looks like I need to get the two TF's together by setting the same DH for both then? So it the CV TF makes it to it's Patrol Hex and stops, the AO TF will catch up and then automatically refuel the units in the CV TF that are in need? Or will I need to do it manually?

I usually do it manually, but I do believe it will happen automatically if one of the TFs is low on fuel

I almost always do it manually as well, but I've been with the understanding that ships will automatically refuel themselves from others in the hex. This can create problems, but makes sense from an operational point of view. It does cut their movement dramatically however, as it should.

By the way, if ships within a retreaing TF have significantly different damage, it's often worth sending them back at varying speeds, depending of course on enemy deployments, and your own escort capability.

I have seen many times a depleted (red) task force pass through a hex with a tk/ao, and come out refueled. I am puzzled how it did it, since it was at a mind-point when it happened. (someone stated, however, that there are 2 end-points per game turn, so maybe it refueled on one of these.
