Several historical events have unpleasant effects for the Soviets, so it's best to play unhistorically to avoid those effects.

Most players probably know that the USSR should declare war against Germany when Germany attacks the low countries. That way the shock effect causes least damage, if any.

Another suggestion, maybe not so obvious, is to attack Finland before the event of territorial demand starts the winter war. The problem with the historical event is that conquering Finland becomes costly when Finns sue for peace (IIRC, in terms of social unrest). You can bypass this costly effect by early attack (even as early as in the end of September). You just need 5 weak (but fast) units to siege Petsamo in the North and a stronger force in the south coast of Finland. Finland should surrender by January, which is well before German attack on the Low countries.

I haven't played any further yet, so I'm not aware of any side effects that might invalidate this strategy.

I'm playing single player, normal difficulty.

Well I think social unrest is good.

It's not realistic that USSR would control Finland without problems.

I think they should fix your explotation so you can not do that strategy as Soviets.

This is a WW2 game, not HOI 3 fantasy what if?

Here is another abuse. Yes, they are abuses because event based mechanism is so easy to abuse.

You need to attack Germany soon (e.g. when they attack the Low Countries) but that's costly in stability (unrest increases). Instead of declaring war on Germany, declare war on other country like Bulgaria. Bulgaria then joins the axis and you are at war without social unrest penalty. Even better, Bulgaria is not able to attack because they have no land connetion to USSR or axis countries [:)]

All rather gamey don't you think?  There should be more randomness in the events me thinks or some way to not know exactly what will happen when you do what. General historical events that have a reasonable chance of happening should of course happen.

If Germany attacks France, Britain will join in etc. but all these secrete events that are triggered if A+B+C happen should be random and not known to the general gamer. Maybe some kind of ability to mod special events but then have the ability of the Modder to put them under lock and key with a password so no one but he/she will know what the criteria or even the possibility is of them happening.

Personally I've decided to not try to figure out when special events are going to happen and just let them happen without investigating their criteria.
Some kind of special, special events folder that is password protected.

Not to discourage, but you are just starting your journey down a road well traveled.

Personally I enjoy playing the USSR.

Still IMO no matter "What's your strategy" playing against the AI is interesting, sometimes annoying, slightly challenging but never fatal.
