CV Zuikaku -> Excessive patrol OP losses? (2/15/2010 9:41:34 AM)

I have Emilies on 6000ft naval search at 50% whilst other 50% is on rest. They are searching 15 hexes away (not even near maximum radius, have experinced pilots (60's). And 3 units with about 30 planes suffer 1-3 ops losses per day. Is there any way to tone this down? Does different altitude helps?

I'm having a difficult time keeping my Japanese patrol aircraft in the air too.
I think the problem stems primarily from the very high maintenance rating of the planes.

Lower the search range to 10-12,in my experience this has a big impact on OpLosses.

I´m suffering the same losses as the Allied player. Usually I lose more PBYs than I get as replacement, therefore I had to disband other squadrons to fill out the frontline units. And this won´t get better until late 43 as the Allied when you receive additional patrol bombers.

In my experience, flying to normal range, setting patrols to 50%, and having enough of both air support and supply at the home base, keeps ops losses within acceptable limits, both for Allies and Japanese. I just checked Catalina ops losses in my ongoing PBEM, and, by March 1, 1942, I lost 16 planes, some of which possibly were damaged in air combat.

I had many losses... 12 hexes (this was ok AND should be your maximum), search 50% + train 30%. Conclusion: like 15 patrol planes lost per month (operational losses, obviously).

But then a contributor said that he had only 1 or 2 losses per month (50% search + 50% rest). In other words, that 30% training made the difference! I can tell it's true because I followed his advice. Now I only lose 2 or 3 patrol planes per month.

Castor, you were having more or less my same losses. Are you sure you were not doing something wrong (like me)?

TBH i have some of my cats on 100% search and see very little ops loss

CapAndGown -> RE: Excessive patrol OP losses? (2/15/2010 3:15:38 PM)

I was worried about ops loses with my Mavis's, but that has not proven to be a problem yet, even though I run them at 80% search, 20% rest with a radius of 20 hexes. Now the planes do have a lot of down time due to the high service rating, but I haven't seen much in the way of ops losses. I have seen allied players complaining more about the Cats than I have IJN players. Maybe it has to do with pilot experience?

It got so bad for me I had to use B17's to patrol with. I am not sure what I can do different.
