KG Erwin -> The Pacific : the Old Breed 1942-45 (2/17/2010 2:13:59 AM)

[For this campaign, I am using "Low Carnage" settings, but C&C is turned OFF. ]

It is August 1942, and the 1st Battalion 5th Marines is part of America's first offensive. We are part of the 1st Marine Division, tasked with invading the Japanese-held island of Guadalcanal, which holds an airfield upon which the enemy can threaten our lifeline to Australia.

My reinforced battalion, designated Combat Team 15, is ordered to occupy a 2000 yard defensive frontage west of the airfield, which we occupied after the Japanese fled the area.

Combat Team 15 consists of 1/5 Bn, plus Company A of the division's tank battalion (fifteen M2A4 light tanks), two M3 75mm GMCs from the special weapons battalion, and attachments of Engineers and scouts. We have indirect support from two 105mm battalions of 11th Arty Reg.

This is a very different unit from the one that originally formed the 5th Reg in February 1941. The original 1/5 became the 1st Raider Battalion, so my battalion was reconstituted in February 1942. Fortunately, we have the services of a few old salts who are veterans of the "banana wars" of the 1930s. My company commanders are Kaempfer (A), Hawkins (B) and Walt (C). The majority of the troops are mere boys, fresh out of boot camp.

Our opponents are veterans of earlier campaigns, and have a reputation for being fearsome.

The Japanese have landed reinforcements, and we expect to be attacked.

August 1942: It is clear, and we receive reports from a group of native scouts led by an Australian officer that we will be attacked by a large Japanese force. At 2000 hrs the enemy launches their assault. The Japanese have ample artillery support, and then appear out of the jungle in a human wave. We respond with every weapon at our disposal, and try to hold them back. They attack with shouts of "banzai", and hurl themselves against our positions.

The Japanese in the attack seem to throw everything at us, including scouts, anti-tank teams, machine gunners, snipers and regular infantry, all in the front-line assault. They expend men as freely as they do their ammunition. The enemy simply tries to overwhelm us with numbers, regardless of losses. The Marines, by contrast, rely on their firepower while trying to keep our losses at a minimum.
