Chris21wen -> Widescreen switch problem (2/19/2010 12:13:21 AM)

Or at least I think there is.

I posted this in the AE forum.

'First I don't have a problem with it but I would like to know what the wide screen settings do. Currently I'm running AE without any widescreen switches resulting in a stretched map etc. This bothers me not.

If I use the swtiches -px#### -py#### will this result in a wide screen map without the distortion? '

The answer was 'yes' , so I tried it but the switches appear to make no difference what-so-ever. In both cases I get the same numebr of hexes. If the switches worked as above I would have expected more acrosss the screen.

I'm using -px1440 -py0900, windows 7 and an ATI card.

I was advised to post it here.

BigJ62 -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/19/2010 12:18:43 AM)

There is a minor bug with wide screen.

dorjun driver -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/19/2010 1:01:40 AM)

Ain't it a bummer when we get what we wish for?[:'(]

Does this mean that it is known that there are problems with ATI cards and Windows 7 64-bit regarding the screen resolution change?

jwilkerson -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/19/2010 7:35:31 PM)

Nope.

We put in some protection - to try to mitigate people using resolutions that were not supported. In some cases this protection is too strong and we will back it off a bit. Might cause some new problems and solve some old ones - but we will try to find the best balance. We do not have the resources to test every possible combination of hardware and software and settings that people might come up with - so we are having to find the best balance with some experimentation.

jigsaw -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/19/2010 9:42:36 PM)

Heh, just my luck, finally decided to buy this game due to the wide screen support and it doesnt work for me either (no worries though, understand its a beta at the moment!) [:)]

Just to confirm another report, it doesnt seem to want to run on Vista 64 with an ATI for me card either, tried just about everything.  Dual monitor setup, not sure if that may be related.

Any chance you guys will be releasing beta patch that might get this running...1024x768 on a 30" monitor makes my eyes bleed [;)]

Halsey -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/19/2010 11:27:12 PM)

This is just an uneducated guess, but...

Create a new shortcut for the exe application from your main AE folder.

Move it to your desktop.
Then change the new shortcut properties for the widescreen enhancements.

This is what I did, and the beta fired up correctly on the first try.
I went with 1440x0900, as that's my monitor's best resolution setting.

It works fine on my Vista 64/ATI card single monitor. It will not work with a dual monitor setup. I've tried it repeatedly - dual monitor support is not going to work.

Iridium -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/20/2010 1:15:57 AM)

It works for me but I wish I could make full use of my screen. I'm using an odd resolution: 1824 x 1026 and it won't work at this despite every other program working fine.

I can get 1920 x 1080 to work but the edges of the game are cut off. [:(]

I'm running Vista 64 bit with the latest drivers and a Nvidia 285 GTX.

BigJ62 -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/20/2010 1:30:13 AM)

That would be a monitor or video card setting doing that.

Hmm, interesting...my monitor was set to a different mode and was causing the issue. Fixed. [8D]

Chris21wen -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/20/2010 7:58:22 AM)

I was having a problem with these switches but no longer. I reinstalled the beta patch and now they work. I have also found out that they will work for any resolution, wide or not. Further you can have your machine on one resolution and the game on another although I've only tried this with my desktop on max res with a lower game res. I've not tried the other way round. I can't have thing the other way round with my old eyes.

It's good.

sven6345789 -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/20/2010 10:42:39 AM)

Question might sound rather dumb but Where do i find the switch?; asked that question before and got the info "next to the exe file". Checked that file but somehow haven't found it yet. Do i have to open the file with an editor or something? Settings won't be a problem after this.
obviously, i am not a computer expert[&:]

Perhaps you could add a "force" switch for the ones of us who know what they are doing?! [8|]

Halsey -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/20/2010 11:53:44 AM)

There is no actual switch...

On the quick launch shortcut icon, on your desktop.
Or create a new shortcut from the game folder, and move it to your desktop.(Recommended)

Right click, then properties.

In the "Target" box it gives the location of the application.
You must add this after the target location: (space)-px0000(space)-py0000
0000 represents your screen resolutions.
Apply, and your done.

For instance mine is set on 1440x0900.

So:
"Target Location" -px1440 -py0900

There are other application enhancements listed in the readme file for the patch.
These add extra stuff.[;)]

Thank you Halsey but I knew that.
It works on my notebook but not on my primary PC.

As I understood jwilkerson the cause that it is sometimes not working is that the program thinks that your PC can't do it when it could.
So my proposal for the developers is to add a switch/parameter to force the resolution change. (example: -px1400 -py0900 -f)
This should help at least when I understood the problem correctly.

We already have fix that works - are you suggesting that we shelf our solution and try yours instead? [:D]

MorningDew -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/20/2010 4:18:43 PM)

I found a fix too. I bougth a monitor that supported higher resolutions[:D] Thanks for giving me the reason[;)][;)][&o][&o]

I will answer your question after I tried your fix [;)]
By the way. I just installed Virtual PC 2007 on my PC and installed a Windows XP SP2 and the resolution change worked in the virtual machine as it should.

Reg -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/20/2010 8:57:44 PM)

I haven't seen any complaints on the forum about wide screen from people running XP. (It worked just fine first time on my XP laptop running an external 24" monitor).

This appears to be an operating system/driver thing....

WLockard -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/20/2010 9:08:23 PM)

I have noticed that on full screen I have some problems with the screen not refreshing when making mouseovers. It does not happen in windowed mode. In full screen the screen will refresh if you scroll the screen a bit. I am running XP sith sp3, a Nvidia 8800 GTX and the 195.62 driver set from 11/09. k What I haven't tried yet is different command line switch settings to see if they affect the problem.

There have been failures and successes with XP, Vista, and Windows 7. Definitely not an operating system issue. However. some users have found that getting the latest drivers for their video cards solved the problem. For those who are still having problems I would just patiently wait for the official patch 3.

WLockard -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (2/21/2010 12:39:55 AM)

In regards to my post above, I found that by not using the -dd_sw switch in full screen mode fixed my graphics glitches.

I just tried the new official patch with my Win7 64-bit machine. There is some progress but it is still not working as I would expect.
I have a 1680*1050 Display. If I set the game to -px1680 -py1050 and fullscreen it works. If I set the game to -px1440 -py900 (or 0900) it doesn't. But it does work (1440*900) if I change the resolution in Windows to 1440*900.
The same goes for the "Window Mode". Only the set Windows resolution is working.

Now back to my "force-switch" proposal [;)]
Sorry, but I couldn't resist. [8|]

Well you would have to tell us how your "force" proposal works!.

In the mean time - we realize the screen parameters will not work for everyone - and obivously we cannot test every combination - not even close - we only have about 30 people with about 45 machines. There are many combinations we do not have. As per the documentation - if using the parameters is causing problems - then the best solution is to remove them.

Is there anything I can do to help you make this work on my machine too?
I hope you did not misunderstand me. I don't know how it works. I just thought it could perhaps be possible to force the settings because I understood that AE does check which resolutions the machine supports and only accepts these settings. [&:]
Anyway thank you for your work in the past and future. [&o]

The last escape would be to go back to XP. Not that there are many advantages of Win 7 as far as I am concerned.

A Oskin -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (3/5/2010 9:26:21 AM)

Just for the record. I'm running a HP wide screen laptop with XP and an ATI Radeon card and nothing works.

jomni -> RE: Widescreen switch problem (3/5/2010 11:44:15 AM)

Someone mentioned about creating a new shortcut earlier.
It is what I did to make widescreen work.

Go to AE main directory.
Right Click on the main .exe and create shortcut.
Right click the shortcut, select properties and put in the commands.

None of the start menu and original desktop shortcuts work with the commands.  Hope it works for you guys as well.
