jb123 -> B-17 bomber replacements (2/22/2010 3:16:04 AM)

Hello, I think I am confused and missing something.

Ironman, all patched up, mid-may 42 vs AI.

B-17Ds get no replacments
b-17Es get 15 a month from 1/42 to 7/42 and then go out of production
B-17Fs get 24 a month from 8/42 to 10/42 and then go out of production.

And then there are no more B-17s until the G model comes out in mid 45

There are a few squadrons that enter at mojave and then must be withdrawn, which may be sort of like the convoy system to dump some heavy bombers in the pool. But am I really supposed to fight the war with no b-17s? Is this how it was in real life, I seem to remember the b-17 being something of a fixture of the PacWar. I can understand restrictions, but I need something.

Is this correct? or will my factories start producing them on the west coast or something?

The B-24 was used in the Pacific much more that the B-17. The B-17s went to Europe. The B-24 has a longer range that was most useful in the Pacific.

Cool, thanks. So WAD in the game is no b-17s from 10-42 to mid 45.

You will see lots of B24's arriving both in the pool starting mid 42 and as formed squadrons later in the year and through out 43.

For the allied player I assembled the aircraft replacement data into a spreadsheet (scen.1).

Check it out here:

OK, lots may be a stretch, but considering what we start out with, the B24 are lots [:)]

IIRC the 15 B-17 replacement per month will be replaced with a 15 B-24 replacement per month when the B-24 starts to trickle in. But in early 43 the 15 change to someting around 30. THAT is LOTS. [:D]

thanks, this is great

And......the B24 has a bigger bombload and greater range. Not a bad deal.

You not only get the Army liberators but start to get the Navy verison at about 15 a month. It is pretty much the same rate as in WITP and I never ran low of heavies in that game-once they started to crank them out.

But Jeeze, I don't ever see getting enough medium bombers..[;)]

Pascal_slith -> RE: B-17 bomber replacements (2/23/2010 6:10:52 AM)

If I remember correctly, only about 100 B-17's in all served in the Pacific. I'll have to find the book (the name escapes me momentarily) that only concentrated on B-17 activity in this theater.

Halsey -> RE: B-17 bomber replacements (2/23/2010 8:48:46 PM)

Don't squander the F series.

They have the longest range of any 4E bomber, until the 29's show up.

Reserve them for the experienced Bomber Recon Sqdns.[;)]

Book is called "Fortress Against the Sun"

Not counting the few C's and D's, you have;

180 x B-17E
49 x B-17F

serving in the pacific.

And, while the riddle has already been solved, it's not that the G comes out in '45, it's just that you see groups from the Eighth Air Force show up from Europe, and the Gs are replacements for these units. Good thing, too, since I'm sure most of what transferred/would have transferred from Europe would've been pretty worn out by then.
