sysrkm -> Turn Based PC wargame in Star Trek Theme (2/23/2010 10:57:24 PM)

Hi folks,

I didn't want to clutter the STO thread with this so I'll start something here. Has anyone heard about a Turn Based Star Trek game or a computer version of Star Fleet Battles?

Regards,

Rob

You might want to try this site.

RedArgo -> RE: Turn Based PC wargame in Star Trek Theme (2/24/2010 2:30:29 AM)

I occassionally look for a turn basic space combat game like SFB, but I've not come across anything. There was an ancient game from SSI called the Warp Factor that was SFB without the license. I'm suprised no one has ever made a newer computer version or clone of SFB considering how long it has been around and I presume how popular it was or is.

Except for the fact it's RTS, Starfleet Command I-III + Orion Pirates is Starfleet Battles. Even though you can turn the speed waaaay down, it's still RTS. But worth a look if found in a bargain bin. Also note there were TONS of mods to make the first two versions look very much like the original SFB.

Oooh forgot that one! The first one changed the names but even had the schematics for Star Trek ships. Later editions did away with that once SSI got their hands spanked. (Im suprised they didn't get their hands spanked more often in the 80's as many of their games were direct correlations (not conversions, which was probably the key) of AH, SPI, etc boardgames at the time.

sysrkm -> RE: Turn Based PC wargame in Star Trek Theme (2/24/2010 4:52:17 PM)

Hi folks,

Thanks for the heads up on SFB Online, but it is not a standalone product, it's more like what Vassal is for board wargames.

I was looking more for something like what MekTek is to Battletech and Mechwarrior, something along those same lines for Star Fleet Battles or even a TURN based version of Starfleet Command.

I'd even settle for a computer version of Silent Death by Iron Crown. Man I LOVED that game...

If anyone has heard of such games existing, please let me know.

Regards,

Rob

I've been looking for the same for a very long time. To date, the closest is still SSI's 1981 game; The Warp Factor (as mentioned above)...

I'm not really familiar with the Star Trek games you're referring to. But I do recall someone made a Star Drek mod for Advqnced Tactics. This is a hex-based game not an RTS. But if you aren't looking for a 3D game you might look in the Advanced Tactics forum and see more discusion.

Did you try Birth of the Federation? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation:_Birth_of_the_Federation

The Warp Factor is available around the net for different emulators (i.e. AppleWin for Apples, VICE for C64's, etc. So it's free to try, but remember it was programmed and released by 1981 (absolutely astonishing game if taken in the context of the gaming industry back then), so you may find it tedious and unforgiving (i.e. no "take-backs").

Starfleet Command is available in bargain bins and usually on Ferrengi-bay, I mean E-bay. (you want SFC II as it had the most mods for making it look like TOS and/or SFB)

I bought Advanced Tactics with the last Xmas sale... but I can't use it due to an unadvertised requirement for .Net (I cannot use .Net as it wreaks havoc on my system). My problem is that I took too long getting around to trying it, to really try for a refund. Hmmm... can I legally sell a downloaded Matrix game? (I've never paid attention to the question when it cropped up in the past).

bartholimew -> RE: Turn Based PC wargame in Star Trek Theme (2/25/2010 11:47:28 PM)

warp factor was the first computer game i ever played. It borrowed from starfleet battles table top game combat system. Amazing they were never sued but in those days paramount wasn't sending lawyers to look at games with confederation ships that looked like startrek races misspelled.

Starfleet Command uses the same rules as the warp factor but its 3D. Too bad nobody revamped tWF back in the 486 days. Try SfC.

A more important aspect to note is that SFC was and RTS (huge difference in gameplay from turn based Warp Factor)

Alliance, Klargons, Remans, etc. Actually, SSI did get their hands slapped for the graphic representations of Star Trek. As an example, early versions came with the black data cards and later versions came with the white data cards (see below)...

...and yet the Star Wars franchise never made a stink (the game also included Imperials and Freeman factions, with Star Wars graphic representations).

Then you need to sort out your system. .Net was designed with the intention that most new Windows applications would use it.

sabre1 -> RE: Turn Based PC wargame in Star Trek Theme (2/26/2010 1:09:39 AM)

There was another game from SSI, Crescent something or other that was a turn based space combat between ships simulation. It was a lot of fun IIRC.

killroyishere -> RE: Turn Based PC wargame in Star Trek Theme (2/26/2010 1:36:00 AM)

Another great turn based space fight game by SSI was Renegade Legion Intercepter. It doesn't have ships that look like Trek ships but the combat engine is really very good and the ai as well. You can even custom design your own ship after you've earned enough prestige points. It's the one I play most when I want a good turn based tactical space fight game.

sabre1 -> RE: Turn Based PC wargame in Star Trek Theme (2/26/2010 1:39:06 AM)

That was it Killroyishere, I could not remember the name. It was a fun game.

I could wax philosophical about Microsoft's intentions and NET, but the long and short of it is that I already have enough games to last several lifetimes. I only need to know actual system requirements before a purchase.

But that argument is untimely in this particular case*, so now I want to know whether I can legally sell a Matrix game.

* Note: I'm sure the lack of full system requirements disclosure was not intentional on Matrix' part. They've shown too much class for that to even be a thought.

It sounds like you're referring to The Cosmic Balance and The Cosmic Balance II, both of which were spiritual (if not actual) offshoots of The Warp Factor, with Cosmic Balance II being the strategic game. Both of which were a little more careful to not let any Star Trek-like graphics into the game(s). Here's one of the default scenerios from The Cosmic Balance ("Deep Space Encounter") featuring the Enterprise versus The Reliant...

Yes, there was that one as well (I missed the posts referring to this before my last post)...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework

Basically a library of procedures and function which are installed on your system...alot of programs will access these procedures and functions in order to execute properly. If you don't have the .NET framework installed, it will likely limit the available software you can run...which will only get more limited as time goes on I would suspect. For example, alot new games insist on the installation of .NET and if you don't have it installed, the game won't run - afterall, it's using a shed load of functions provided by the .NET system.

Meant to say I was particularly saddened by the inclusion of the garbage collector. Whilst a good idea, I always felt as a programmer if you couldn't release what you used then you probably shouldn't be programming. The inclusion of the garbage collector system only encourages programmers to be flippant with their code (imo)...on the other hand, it does mean peoples machines will be "protected" to some degree from running out of resources.

Killroyishere,

Judge was right - your anti-trolling sig ends up in fact being trolling as when you name other users as trolls (and are not a mod) that constitutes a personal attack. Please change your sig at your next login to remove any user names.

in this thread - so change it pls

By the way, if you switched on PMs, I could have discussed it privately with you. Whilst you might be getting some fun from baiting me, flouting Eriks suggestion will only get his back up. Unless, of course, you consider his post to be trolling as it was nothing to do with the topic and more to do with your sig (which isn't part of the topic and clearly not designed to bait and badger)

Depends on whether commercial programmers retain their ability to program (or if the new breed gains the ability to program).

So far only two have interested me. In the one case, it turned out to be a good thing I didn't buy it. In the other case, well, I bought it because I didn't know of the requirement (read: Advanced Tactics).

Great example. It not only increases programmers' dependency on Microsoft (does anybody think that's a good thing?), it can encourage even lazier programming (not to mention, in this age of hackers, spammers, virii, future incompatibilities, etc, ...more hooks into my system cannot be a good thing). I won't (knowingly) buy a game that needs any version of (dot)Net. Even if every single programmer "falls into the Net*," I still have enough games to last several lifetimes. (and if push comes to shove, I have a family I could pay attention to. ...In dire times that is! *grin*)

* Horrible pun intended. *sheepish grin*

Man, I'm having flashbacks on the table top Star Fleet Battles. Boy, did I have some epic campaigns! I remember over summer vacation in the early 80's me and a friend of mine conducted a General War and when school started in September all we had left of both fleets were light cruisers and destroyers!  [:D]

We had fleet lists made out to make sure we were evenly matched and even had a roster of both fleets with each ship named from the biggest ship down to the smallest frigate. [&o]

heheh I used to play SFB most nights of the week with my friends. We had a wee club and used to fight fleet battles, Starbase Battles et al [:D]

I still have my SFB kit in the loft both the older Commanders edition and now old Captains Edition. I see there is a new verion of SFB out with reduced bookeeping I may give it a looksee.

I used to prefer playing as a Klingon but Romulan Plasmas were also fun to scare the Flat heads with [sm=00000023.gif]
