spartanwarrior -> Some questions about Allies (2/25/2010 9:02:15 PM)

Hi, Im a new player and have been working the grand campaign through jan 42 now. If anyone can help me with the following questions:

1). What are some allied strategies that i should consider?

2). How do i select ground units for convoy to another location? Seems that some of the combat units are never ready to convoy whereas some of the HQ and AA units are available rather easily?

3). How do i convoy or move CD units? i want to bulk up Darwin but cant seem to get unit ready to transport? should i do it via road or ship?

4). how do i transport my bombers and fighters from west coast to front lines? Do i use ships to transport or is there an island hop strat?

Any other tips would be fabulous! I love the detail of the game and really appreciate as the allies that the Jap forces are kicking my butt just like history...but would like to ensure that i dont make any stupid mistakes,

Thanks, Spartanwarrior

Welcome to the forum.
If you're going to post very much, (or any, really) you might tone down the ginormous tank photo. Just a tip.

Welcome to the game

1). remember the principle of concentration of force. It will NEVER let you down. Forget it and you will have a long and miserable experience. Use your naval forces to resist invasions where the enemy has limited or no ground based air support. Use carriers in joint defense in the targeted defensive areas. Build up with purpose, and engage in bombing and CAP combat. In the sea, you cant defend it all at beginning. Choose a few places and setup and ambush the the japs. The beginning of the end of the Jap aggression is when they have to begin to escort all attacks. By summer 42, you should be able to launch an invasion of your own, unless you ahve suffered massive CV losses.

2). Some units are in restricted HQ's. Pull up the desired land or Air unit and select the HQ. If it is greyed out, has an (R) or is in a restriced command HQ - West Coast, etc - you have to use political points (PP) to change to a non restrticted HQ before moving by sea. Also to move by sea you have two basic options transport (units must be in strategic mode) and amphibious invasion (units must be in combat mode). Amphib used to move to level 0 ports and all enemy invasions.

3). Darwin...Again, look at the specific unit, say CD. If the 'move' is greyed out it is a static unit. All units in Australia Command HQ are restricted, and to move by sea, you have to pay PP. If you want to beef up Darwin more than you have locally available, the land route is a 40-70 day path from Townsville. Sea is much faster. A few CD"s in Australia are quite useful in repelling invasions where you think the enemy might try. you have to pay PP on them. Plan out what you want and execute.

4). Most planes from USA have have to be loaded on transports or CV's and sent to their location. Also many require PP to release. only select Patrol and Heavy bombers can reach Pearl - and Australia by extension. Air transport convoys deliver their planes ready - transport deliver all planes damaged

general tip - you probably will do best setting supply and fuel hub-bases between USA and Australia. Many ships cannot get all the way from USA to Australia or New Guinea. Segment cargo and AP by range and speed and locate them for missions accordingly. Use Capetown, Abadan, and Aden to get supply and fuel for India and Australia and New Zealand.

And of course, have fun and try new things. have objectives and work towards them.

1. Try to win. (Sorry, but you asked a pretty broad question.)
2. By "convoy" do you mean sea transport? If so, make up a task force in either Transport or Amphibious mode, and tell land units to load onto the ships. It's in the manual. If you're having trouble getting them to load, they're probably Restricted units. This is a key thing to understand, also in the manual, and various threads here. If the unit belongs to a Restricted headquarters, you can't put it on a ship. In some cases you can use Political Points to "buy out" the unit into a non-Restricted command. In other cases the unit is permanently Restricted. There are a lot of these in Austrailia, and on the US West Coast in particular. Read the manual, and pay particular attention to the screen shots.
3. Some CD units are Static--they can't move, they're forts. Thsi is noted on the various info screens. If they're not Static they move just as any land unit does. If the unit is not Static, and it's not Restricted, it's your choice whether to use roads, rails, or ships. Roads/rails are safer, but slower.
4. Aircraft can travel on cargo ships (xAKs mostly) as cargo, but they're disassembled that way and have to be put together at the destination. Or they can be loaded in Air Transport task forces and go assembled. Or you can Transfer Base them and take damage in transit. You can do this by island hopping, or use the off-map movement system.

Biggest stupid mistake--losing all our carriers in 1942. Protect them, don't try to win the war in the first year.

Good luck.

Strategy

The Allies will win as soon as they can maintain airbases for B-29's within striking distance of Japan.

All you have to do is figure out how you want to accomplish this.
Then put it all in motion.

Mynok -> RE: Some questions about Allies (2/26/2010 3:14:33 AM)

You can tell static portions of units by the * next to them.

spartanwarrior -> RE: Some questions about Allies (2/26/2010 5:31:18 PM)

Hey all. sorry about the tank pic! I didnt realize it would be so bit! That is actually my old ride. Anyway, all tips and answers are much appreciated. Ive focused my strat on protecting the CV task forces and only popping them out on easy target and running from Jap CV's. Im reinforcing Darwin from evacuated DEI and Singapore forces and redoubting Bataan for the short term. im only in January 42 so im still losing ground in most areas but i noticed that the Jap CV group is haunting the DEI area. Im fighting for wake and reinforcing Midway to ensure that i keep the northern route open. Also getting supplies to Noumea and Suva to maintain a southern supply chain. Otherwise, waiting unil my BB force is repaired in Pearl before i forray out into anything dangerous. Thanks for all the tips. this game rocks but i can see it taking months of playing time before i get any momentum going. Also one other question: My Mine layers are somewhat quirky about laying mines. any tips for that?

freeboy -> RE: Some questions about Allies (2/26/2010 6:30:35 PM)

remember to set them to deploy mines...
transport setting carries units in Strategic formation where as Amphib formation, same ships different settings, carries units in combat settings.. these seeming endless ways the different settings affect your game are not too bad as the allies, once you get it, that proverbial light comes on, then things will be clearer..
As for your tactics.. stay alive in 42.. for your CV's.. there are many different strategies, as a new player the application of conentration of force, with all arms of the forces available to you is the ticket.. 42.. I find that picking bases in teh line of fire, and some I cannot afford to lose and reinforcing them is my favorite choice.. I also am very aggressive and choose to run cl ca groups around in SRA attacking enemy shipping and retreating under air cover....Remember the enemy cv's are prety tough to get by air, but not against night raiders.. small fast cl ca and even dd groups can suprise the japs at night.. good luck..
remember these forums ar eloaded with folks with hundreds and I might add thousands of hours in this and witp so ask ?, I still do

jeffs -> RE: Some questions about Allies (2/27/2010 8:58:12 AM)

I would not build up Darwin too much... He can take it if he wants. And no point in getting too much killed defending it....

Be able to defend deeper in Austalia with the ability to counterattack...Holding Perth though is more important....
