Speedy Gonzales -> Need help with my torpedoe bombers (3/3/2010 7:33:53 PM)

Somehow the torpedoe bombers on my carriers almost never fly. I have Vildebeests and Swordfishes flying out of Rangoon that sink loads of ships with torps but not my Devastators.

Here is my usual setup:
Escort Fighters 10.000 feet
Dive Bombers 10.000 feet
Torpedoe Bombers 2.000 feet.

I set the TB's low to make sure they use torpedoes and not bombs. Any idea what is going wrong?

Sometimes their refusal to work is really annoying:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Lunga at 114,138

Here's what I would check:

1) make sure that your carriers have torpedoes available for the TB groups
2) check the TB group screens & make sure that the "use torpedoes" option is enabled
3) check the attack range, torpedoes can only be carried out to the normal range; at extended range they carry bombs
4) check the TB group leaders & make sure that their aggressiveness ratings aren't too low

I would also use a higher altitude. TBs will drop down to the correct altitude automatically to carry out their attacks.

Also try and fly them at the same altitude as your escort, I believe that will help their chances of flying.

Altitude does not determine whether TBs use torpedoes or bombs. When you click on the air unit, in the middle of the screen is a button you can click that switches between "use bombs" and "use torpedoes". That determines what the planes use. If there are no torpedoes available, the "use torpedoes" letters will be in red. Same thing with bombs.

Just in case you missed it the first time... [;)]

Thanks for the help! I will set them to the same level as the db's and see what happens. Maybe those BB's are still hangin around...

Make sure they are not all flying some kind of search mission or on training. Not that any of us would ever leave our combat aircraft on training when going into combat. [:-]

Being too new to know better, but this explains my problems with turn 1. When I load up Scen 1, KB has no torpedos (it is red) and no way to load them (no replinish from port option). I am clearly missing something as this makes no sense. Go to Pearl with no torpedos!!

No, you need to do a mouse over of the red torpedo message and read it. It says that torpedoes will be used against naval targets, if available and Naval Attack is chosen, and bombs will be used against land targets. Since the Kates of KB are set for either Port Attack or Airfield attack, the torpedoes will be in red.

bristolduke -> RE: Need help with my torpedoe bombers (3/4/2010 2:19:08 AM)

So you have to do a naval attack on a port in order for torpodeos to be used?

vonTirpitz -> RE: Need help with my torpedoe bombers (3/4/2010 2:28:16 AM)

No.

Port Attacks can use torpedoes if available. Not guaranteed that a particular strike will actually use them but most of the time I have found that they do.

bristolduke -> RE: Need help with my torpedoe bombers (3/4/2010 2:37:18 AM)

OK Thanks
