All you gamers who like the Silent Hunter series of games,I would suggest you ignore this new installment,Silent Hunter 5 Battle of the Atlantic will sink like a stone it sucks! The worst part is if you don't have an internet connection then you can't play the game.[:@][:@][:@]

Obsolete -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 9:02:34 AM)

Why on earth would you support a KGB/Guestappo/CIA type of DRM Big-Brother software-package?

RyanCrierie -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 10:44:05 AM)

To change to english:

Ubisoft introduced a new type of DRM. It's pretty bad.

PC Gamer's blog broke it a bit ago:

quote:

PC Gamer Blog wrote:
When we heard of Ubisoft's plan to require an internet connection for all their future PC games, we hoped they'd abort it or scale it back in the face of the outrage and astonishment it caused. They haven't, and it's here. Details are below.

We've just received Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII for review, and verified with Ubisoft that the DRM is the same as the boxed product. If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game. All your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected.

The game first starts the Ubisoft Game Launcher, which checks for updates. If you try to launch the game when you're not online, you hit an error message right away. So I tried a different test: start the game while online, play a little, then unplug my net cable. This is the same as what happens if your net connection drops momentarily, your router is rebooted, or the game loses its connection to Ubisoft's 'Master servers'. The game stopped, and I was dumped back to a menu screen - all my progress since it last autosaved was lost.

Ubi have asked that we not show screenshots of Assassin's Creed 2 on PC, so here's my best MS Paint illustration of what you'll see. [Image]

Even if everyone in the world had perfect internet connections that never dropped out, this would still mean that any time Ubisoft's 'Master servers' are down for any reason, everyone playing a current Ubisoft game is kicked out of it and loses their progress. Even massively multiplayer games aren't so draconian about the internet: you can't play when the server's down, but at least you don't lose anything for getting disconnected.

The only benefit we're being offered is the ability to store our savegames online. Personally, I'm in the rare position of getting to play PC games at work, and even for me this is a fringe benefit. How many normal gamers have two separate gaming machines on which they play the same single-player games? And how many of those don't know about DropBox, Live Mesh or any of the dozens of free services that can already sync your savegames perfectly well?

We've all seen again and again that you can't stop the piracy scene from cracking your game and distributing it, free of DRM. But you can stop the people who love your games from downloading it, and you do that by making the retail experience better - not worse.

SuluSea -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 12:13:38 PM)

I'm a Silent Hunter fan but will never install that software on my PC. Thanks but..................... no thanks.

vonRocko -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 1:03:10 PM)

Wow, this just wrecked my day. I was looking forward to this. But I certainly won't purchase this now.[:@]

hellfirejet -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 1:14:47 PM)

I too was looking forward to playing the game,but unfortunately it is less like a simmulation with this version, and more like a console shoot em up game which I hate,all hope is not lost though, there are modders out there, already trying to get the interface setup similar to Silent Hunter 4 Wolves in the Pacific,but even with all that I will never play it untill the DRM online connection crap is removed.[:@]

uncc -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 1:18:55 PM)

I've purchased Silent Hunter I, II, III, and IV as well as the add-ons for SHII and SHIV. SHV (and any other Ubisoft game that has such draconian DRM) will never be on my PC unless/until Ubisoft comes to their senses. [:@]

carnifex -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 3:39:14 PM)

I would never ever ever ever ever buy a product that requires me to have an internet connection if that product is capable of offline use.

Zakhal -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 4:03:28 PM)

I have three internet connections and they are all always on so I dont really mind the DRM. They propably patch it away sooner or later anyways. Also my life is filled with more serious issues than this so I dont think its important in the first place. If the game doesnt work because of DRM ill just return it to the store. So far it has never happened in the past 20 years.

Peter Fisla -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 4:28:02 PM)

It's funny how companies think that when I buy a silly $50 piece of software from them that they automatically think that it gives them god given right to monitor what I do on MY computer or give them full access to my computer (SONY DRM Fiasco etc...) or that they can install whatever they want it doesn't matter how much damage it will do to my computer (Securom, Starforce). In this day and age with all the spyware and all the other crap, I do care what's on my computer because I use my computer to do banking and other things...and no...no Anti-Virus is bulletproof, myself I'm the most critical part of the whole computer security process. Also when you read every piece of software End User License Agreement...all of them say the same thing: software companies are not responsible to any damage that their software my cause, so why I should I trust them? Ubisoft I think has been suffering from crappy games and bad custom relations for a for a few years now already...this "internet connection 24/7" isn't going to improve on their sales... I'm voting by not buying anything from them. If we all did that they sure as hell would have to change or disappear. It's easier/cheaper for them to implement DRM in a software then to build good relationships with their customers...corporations pretty much always want the easiest/quickest solution for great revenue. Pirates are around since the dawn of time...so this is not new, it's human nature. This doesn't mean that the rest of the world has to suffer because of that. I do believe that Bioware/EA are on the right track with their Dragons Age and Mass Effect 2 games. Bioware trusts their customers, DAO and ME2 only have CD checks...yeah when you register you get some free DLC...or simply you offer customers further enhancements to the games by offering them DLC that the customers pay for. Bioware/EA made tons of money on DAO and ME2...I'm glad to hear that since that's where my support lies. Thanks also to Matrix Games and other on-line stores like Impulsedriven for not including DRM in their games. I'm of course supporting HPS sims with their CD-checks only as well...

JudgeDredd -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 4:49:45 PM)

CD checks are more annoying to me than internet connection tbh. I really can't be arsed to put the CD in the drive!

I do agree though that they are still living in the dream that a pirated game is a lost sale. It simply isn't the case, at least on a 1:1 ratio. People pirate for various reasons. Some because they can. Some because they cannot afford the game. Some because they want to try it. There are probably many other reasons. Not all of these situations results in a lost sale.

E -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 5:10:15 PM)

Another one I was looking forward to, gets the proverbial. *plonk*

bean5671 -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 5:19:39 PM)

i will never by this

i am one of the poor souls that got hit hard by starforce years ago had to do a complete wipe and reinstall the os i think xp sp1 or 2
have not bought a game with a crappy drm since

sn's and cd checks registering in order to download patchs and updates is fine why do you need more than that

I worked for Autodesk for many a year AUtoCAD Revit ADT Civil 3d and the rest of Autodesks products are some of the most pirated in the world.
AUtodesk has some great solutions and none of them are too hard on the consumer.
ubisoft needs to take a hard look at what they are doing

a7v -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 5:34:15 PM)

When I bought SH III and installed it the sound of my pc was broken[:@]
Then I discovered that they used starforce and immediately turned back the damned thing to the store.

This one also will never find a way onto my harddisk. There are still enough games to play without getting screwed...

Jevhaddah -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 7:21:17 PM)

Not going to buy this pile of tripe neever.. There is a lot of angst and outrage going on over at Subsim.

The game ending in 1943 is bad enough but having to be online ALL the time yoo play is just so aaargh!!!!!.

It's been dumbed down a lot too apparently.

/Sarcasm
I am just waiting to see who is first to find the 'Flying sub Uber Power UP' for pew, pew, pew zillions of tonnage ego stroking goodness...'

It's just like real life and the Graphics are Awesome!!

/ End Sarcasm

What a waste [sm=nono.gif]

Cheers

Hertston -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 7:34:35 PM)

Pfffttt....

I'll put up with moronic DRM if I have to on the rare occasions when the game itself is a 'must buy' (as, I must admit, Jutland turned out to be), but when the product itself seems so iffy it's time to give it a miss. Ubisoft seems to have re-employed the same idiots in suits that decided to use Starfarce a few years ago.

+1
I have little problem with DRM like limited online activation (e.g. Battlefront CM:SF online license system), because Software houses have the right to fight against online piracy, but requesting an online connection to store the saves is just plain madness IMHO.

E -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 7:57:43 PM)

The word on SimHQ is that the DRM has been cracked already, but the game is still far too buggy to jump on and in -->dire<-- need of mods to make it playable.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 9:43:34 PM)

Well I heard it was cracked also, but the Ubi word is "Don't kid yourselves". Apparently the cracked copy isn't "complete"...I guess we're finding out what the online connection requirement is for!

I despair for the PC gaming industry, I really do. On the plus side, with PS3 and XBox hard drives, piracy isn't solely linked to the PC now, so at the very least desv won't "drop the PC because it's the bad boy in the pirating world"...they'd have to consider the issues with PS3 and XBox.

Arctic Blast -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 9:55:58 PM)

The claim seems to be that the game needs to access the missions via the server. So if it's cracked, and doesn't access the server, there's no way to access the missions.

freeboy -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 10:01:45 PM)

speaking of trashingthis title.. granted drm's likethis suck.. did anyone ever redo Aces ofthe DEEP! I loved thatgame!

It seems this isn't a game then. It's a LSORPG (tm)! (Limited Single Player Online Role Playing Game)... back to my massively-modded, completely sufficient Silent Hunter III, while my 6hr version of Das Boot plays on my DVD player. Wake me when all the patching is done, all the mods are unified and the online requirement has been "fixed" ...THEN I'll buy it (and probably out of a bargain bin by that point, to boot!).

Obsolete -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 11:05:27 PM)

LOL, I did some thinking about that quote, and it pretty much sums it up.  The sh*t that people will pay for today...

Exactly, one day it will end up on gog.com and without DRM and then assuming it's actually working and all patched up I can buy it. I don't feel like beta testing that thing for someone like Ubisoft. I got plenty of other games to play...

Greybriar -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/5/2010 11:20:37 PM)

Since all future Ubisoft games will have this copy protection, I won't be buying any games from them in the future.

Same. I dont mind having to be connected to the internet once to install a game or verify a game,..but to make you be connected 100% of the time in order to be able to play single player,....or to even save a game,....thats way too far.

Sadly, no one ever did. The U-Boat simulator Aces of the Deep was an old Sierra/Dynamix title. After 1999, Sierra almost entirely ceased to be a developer of games, and since then the company has been bought, sold and re-organized so many times, it bears no resemblance to it's former self anymore other than in name.

Zakhal -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/6/2010 2:26:42 AM)

But there is no other company that makes games like this. To be honest do not buy it now. SH4 is now on its best with operation monsun and everything. You could play it and wait sh5 to get better.

Still this might be the last of the sub-simulators. Ubi must be crazy to spend AA money on us core players of sims. They were desperate this time.

If it's the last of the genre it's because Ubi took a huge DRM dump on their customers and the customers didn't put up with it, as noted by an overwhelming majority of responses here and throughout the web.

They have only themselves to blame for lost sales now. The same with all the other DRM crazy companies.

Obsolete -> RE: Silent Hunter 5 (3/6/2010 5:24:53 AM)

Well I don't know what to say about that.  Ubi sure knew when to punish its loyal customers.  They dumped this fiasco onto the public with such great timing... while they own both a flag-ship title and didn't have to worry about any competition at the moment.  Let's see... what if E.A. Games had just decided to release a competing sub-sim right at the same time.... BUT WITHOUT DRM?

I suspect that would have Ubi quite worried, AND RIGHTFULLY SO!

Their timing could not be better for STICKING-IT to the paying customer.  But alas, I for one will join the Boycott movement, not that I think it will really do anything, but I have my own ethics.
