Our house got buzzed today and I knew it wasn't a normal plane sound. Grabbed the dogs and went down to the airport.

oldspec4 -> RE: Planes (3/13/2010 10:51:59 PM)

Looks like Laughlin and the Bullhead City airport... I get the B -17 over my house (Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airport) area frequently.

junk2drive -> RE: Planes (3/13/2010 11:43:56 PM)

Yep. I was in Havasu Thursday, turned a corner and saw a 4 engine plane coming toward me. We get Cs from Davis Monthan doing touch and goes all the time at IFP but I thought it might be this B17. I pulled over and got out in time to watch it fly by fairly close.

I beg to differ PR,i can go to RAF Marham any day and take photos,mind you its a waste of time as we got bugger all planes there,most are in a hot sandy place!Still within 5 years we wont have an RAF anymore.

105mm Howitzer -> RE: Planes (3/14/2010 8:48:33 PM)

Really?? I here I thought the RCAF was on a lean diet...

junk2drive -> RE: Planes (3/14/2010 10:56:53 PM)

Four of the fighters have been flying around today. Our house sits on a ridge about 200 feet above the airport. The fighters made a low pass over the house but we couldn't get to the camera fast enough.

Leave it on a window sill and set it on movement detection.

Jevhaddah -> RE: Planes (3/15/2010 12:47:49 AM)

I live in Rural Scotland at the top of a hill and the RAF practice bombing our house on a daily basis[8D]

The neighbours hate it, my twin girls used to squeal and run into the house terrified when they were wee, but now we all go out and watch the show. [:D]

We get some great dogfights and a lot of what I assume are trainees ducking and diving dodging and weaving in smaller jets. Chinooks and other copters have been known to deposit troops in the field just outside my back garden but that's pretty rare these days.

Cheers

Jev

Here's the local newspaper article from Sunday

EDIT link expired

with a pic of fighters. The paper had a shot of the nose art on the B-17. Unless it has been redone, a friend of mind painted it years ago.

Someone must have paid the $425 because it flew this afternoon.

JudgeDredd -> RE: Planes (3/16/2010 7:57:46 AM)

A ride in a B-17 is worth $425 - not sure my wife would agree, though.

junk2drive -> RE: Planes (12/17/2010 7:36:09 PM)

Wednesday a C130 landed and the 1st Marines played capture the airport. World crisis training.

A few minutes ago, 3 of the large twin rotor Marine helicopters landed.

Monday the 747 from Las Vegas was parked here.

Jeffrey H. -> RE: Planes (12/17/2010 7:58:15 PM)

Sounds like a training buildup.

junk2drive -> RE: Planes (12/17/2010 8:00:16 PM)

Sounds like weekend at the casinos.

planner 3 -> RE: Planes (12/18/2010 4:56:44 AM)

The US Marines' answer to trickle down economy. Or should it be "Save Las Vegas"?

Josh -> RE: Planes (12/18/2010 3:28:00 PM)

Sgt. Bilko.
Las Vegas; here we come.

junk2drive -> RE: Planes (12/18/2010 3:31:58 PM)

When I watched Sgt Bilko it was in black and white.

nicwb -> RE: Planes (12/19/2010 11:06:33 AM)

My office looks out over the harbour - over the past couple of months we've had Blackhawks carrying out training exercises every couple of weeks - circle in through some buildings - hover then off over the harbour and back again - its a very impressive sight.

planner 3 -> RE: Planes (12/19/2010 7:57:21 PM)

Airplanes I seen plenty of being a retired Naval Aircrewman, but how about waking up at 7AM to find a full blown Sherman sitting in your back yard, this happened to me in NAS Barbers Point Hawaii. Wife didn't appreciate having a tank cdr eyeball to eyeball with our second story window. The boys from Schofield barracks were on an excercise. We could not take pixs on the base at that time, Bah !

junk2drive -> RE: Planes (1/15/2011 6:12:26 PM)

What country has a single tail fin fighter that is dark green with yellow markers?

Since Tuesday we have had a few F15 looking fighters and this skinny green plane buzzing around all day, doing touch and goes, landing and takeoffs.

I don't know if someone is making a movie or the US is training some ally.

Also had some black helos come and go but that is normal.

Jeffrey H. -> RE: Planes (1/15/2011 6:16:05 PM)

Noticed a lot of agressor type planes flying out of Miramar in the last week. Haven't seen those since Topgun left years ago.

junk2drive -> RE: Planes (1/15/2011 6:24:27 PM)

Too early for Red Flag? Red flag 11-1 was cancelled, 11-2 is the 24th to Feb 4.

Our airport is well located for the Southwest, central to all the ranges. I'm sure they give a good rate for parking. And the casinos probably take care of the pilots and crews.

junk2drive -> RE: Planes (1/18/2011 2:38:14 AM)

They left yesterday afternoon. Local paper today
quote:

BULLHEAD CITY — Area residents were treated to the spectacle of Canadian Air Force jet fighter pilots training in the skies over Bullhead City from Wednesday through Saturday. Three BAE Hawk aircraft were used in the exercise.

Based at Landmark Aviation at Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport, the pilots were scheduled to return to Canada early Sunday morning, depending on weather conditions back home.

They came to Bullhead City for its generally clear flying weather. “We’re combatting a whole bunch of clouds, snow, ice — you name it — up in Canada right now,” said Maj. Scott MacDonald, who was overseeing the operation.

The Canadian Air Force looked for a location where they could train during the winter. “About a year ago, we dispatched a couple of small teams to three spots,” MacDonald said. “We picked smaller airfields that aren’t used very much that have nice weather, (and a) dry, arid climate.” They looked at Bullhead City, as well as locations in New Mexico and Texas. The others were considered too remote. “This one has a little more to offer,” MacDonald said.

The seven pilots, from the 15 Wing Moosejaw Air Force base in the province of Saskatchewan, were in various phases of their training, including one who was on his first mission. Others are near the end of their training and were learning how to fly in formation, “and that’s why you see two airplanes close together,” MacDonald said.

Basic maneuvers included how to react if the plane stalls. “So what we do is we slow the aircraft down, very close to a stall. We’re just simulating that so he knows how to recover if he ever got himself into that kind of trouble.” MacDonald emphasized the stalling maneuver is performed at an altitude 10,000 to 15,000 feet over open desert and not anywhere near a population center.

“We’re just trying to give them the basic handling of the airplane by doing slow flying and stalling the aircraft,” he said. They also practice loops, cloverleafs, and barrel rolls.

“It’s really working out well for us,” MacDonald said. “Unrestricted flying is exactly what we wanted and that’s what we’re getting. There’s no weather issues.” MacDonald hopes to return to Bullhead City later this winter for another week of training.

oldspec4 -> RE: Planes (3/5/2011 6:41:56 PM)

I was in Laughlin, NV. Thursday (Mar 3) and Friday (Mar 4). I was looking at the airport (Bullhead City) across the river and was thinking what a great day to be flying.

May have to get back in April. Have not been close to a flying B-29.

junk2drive -> RE: Planes (3/5/2011 6:54:20 PM)

We were still having frost in the morning a few days ago. Not normal. You were here on two very nice days. Won't be long and the heat will return.

If you lost enough money you can probably get a free room in April, lol.

oldspec4 -> RE: Planes (3/5/2011 7:29:12 PM)

Its been a cold winter (by Arizona standards) in the Phoenix area too. Bring on the heat!

I'm a cheap old guy so never lose much money at Laughlin or Las Vegas. Rooms were going for less than $25/night...almost free.
