Tomcat -> Training fighter pilots (3/14/2010 2:41:41 PM)

I've been away from the game for a while but now that I'm back "in theater" I'm trying to learn how best to train my pilots. I've established a number of squads stateside for the sole purpose of taking pilots fresh out of flight school (replacements) and training them up in specific skills. I normally set the training squads at train 80% for specific skills and I notice that some skills seem to train up fairly well this way (e.g. - torpedo and dive bombers), but my fighter pilots are not going up as much. I set the fighter pilots at train 80% for escort. Is there a better setting? I train USAAF pilots in P40, is there a better plane? The Nav and Marine pilots are using F4s. My thought is that as a pilot in a training squad reaches a certain level of skill and experience I then release him into the general reserve. I've read various threads on pilot training but I'm still looking for the best settings for fighter pilots. Any thoughts from some veterans?

You pretty much have the best way right there. Although on training missions you can set all the way up to 100%, just be prepared for a few ops losses. I generally stay between 70-90% on training and the other percentage on Rest.

Also, a good idea (especially for search aircraft) is to have the ones actually flying missions stay at 50-60% flying search, 20% on rest and 20-30% on training...its basically on the job training, usually because you need them on the front so desperately.

Good rule to follow is that except in very short term situations, always have 10-20% of any squadron resting. It helps alleviate fatigue problems. I would not go more than a week with the squad set to 100% flying missions...your ops losses will quickly mount after that due to pilot fatigue, and then you'll be forced to stand the squad down for a few days to reduce the fatigue.

I personally like 100% training and taking the op losses. once I max out training for the month in a particular catagory, I will rest and move on to the next desired catagory. in cases where I use general training for 'generic' pilot needs, I will rest periodically when fatigue gets too high. Furthmore, I concentrate training by squadron type and rotate either squadron or pilots based on need. Just the way I run my own little world war.

As an aside, I have not identified the real value of rotating pilot for 180 days. What is the best use of this?
