Alfred Packer -> Best PBEM game? (3/18/2010 1:58:08 PM)

Hello, I'm new here. I am an avid strategic gamer (really big into Paradox titles for the last few years). However, as I get older, get kids and have less free time, multiplayer has largely vanished from my life. So, I want to get back into PBEM (I used to play alot of Talonsoft games that way). While I'm looking for a new game, a very strong consideration is "how easy will it be to find opponents?"

What games have the strongest PBEM communities? What Matrix games do you guys recommend?

There is no Best. Check www.theblitz.org forums for the games that have ladders over there. Talonsoft's Campaign Series is now JTCS here and a bargain price for all three games. It depends on what level and time period interests you.

So many choices, so little time! How serious and hard core of a game are you looking for? Matrix really does have the best stable of wargames and most, if not all, have wonderful and active communities. Not knowing what kind of time constraints you have or effort you wish to put into the games, I can suggest a few; for a light, easy to play and quick turn around on opponent's turns you might like to look at Field of Glory or Commander Europe at War Gold. Both are fantastic and easy to pick up and play and both have very active communities. If you are looking for more depth, all of the SSG's Decisive Battles games (Kharkov included) are excellent and have active boards and the AI is among the best. If you are looking for an alternative lifestyle (i.e, abandoning your family) take a look at War In the Pacific Admiral's Edition. It might be the deepest, most time consuming war game to date and it is among the best ever released. I do caution you, it is a huge, huge investment of time. Hope this helps!!

That the Talonsoft classics are still around is pretty cool to here! I might have to pick that up just on principle!

And for easing back into PBEM, I think I'm going to take a look at Commander Gold.

Thanks for the info guys

(and I've just registered at Blitz!)
