I have not done it myself. What you might try, to keep everything free, is download Sun's free product (http://www.virtualbox.org/) and configure it with your old version of Windows (because you own the license already).

Sorry I can't help with experience.

From the thread: WiTP on Linux

It can be done!!

What you are looking at is WITP running on a virtual Windows 98 machine using VMWare Server on a Windows XP host. There is a Linux version of VMWare Server (and Player) so there is no reason a Linux host shouldn't be able to run the same virtual machine.

(My Linux box is a bit slow to run VMWare Server so I had to use my XP machine)

The only issues I have noticed so far is that WITP will only run in windowed mode as virtual DirectX seems to have a problem with full screen (it fails the full screen 'dxdiag' tests too) and those ghost airplanes (another DirectX issue I'll bet). Edit: Interesting, ships and explosions aren't affected by ghosting, only airplane tops (which use alpha bitmap masks!!).

If you want a lean mean Windows operating system (40MB) for your VM, check out LitePC - 98micro.

A couple of tips I found out the hard way.

VMWare Server available free from www.vmware.com
(You just have to give their marketing department your life story, grandmother's maiden name etc)

VMWare Player allows you to run virtual machines submitted by other people. The VMWare site has heaps to download.

It takes about 5 minutes to create a new VM with server. It's pretty self explanatory and the wizard does most of it for you. I gave my VM 400MB of memory (out of 1GB of real memory) and a maximum 3GB hard drive (WITP will require a minimum of 1.2GB). You then boot off a CD or floppy and just install the OS software like a brand new physical machine.

***Important*** Once you have your OS up and running you need to install VMWare Tools. This is under the 'VM' item on the Server menu bar. If you don't do this you will be stuck with a 16 colour 640x480 display!!!!! Install the custom video driver as per displayed instructions.

After this install the rest of your software and you are ready to go.

Hard wasn't it??

Have fun,

Have fun wasting hours getting games to run in linux. Don't use a hammer to drive in screws. Linux is not a gaming tool yet and why waste your time just because you have an issue with Windows. Get Win7 and move on with the right tool for the right job. When linux becomes a game OS that is well supported, then let's all use it. It drives me crazy when the linux guys try to run windows games. Quit wasting your time and get the right tool for the right job.

Bring it on flamers. You know I'm right !!!

The documentation is at http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/.

Looks like things have changed slightly in the VmWare product line since I last looked but you should be able to work it out.

Something else to consider is running the Cedega Windows emulator available from Transgaming.  It's not true Open Source, but Transgaming does periodically submit its older versions to the WINE project so, eventually, everyone benefits.  Cedega will cost you $5/month for the license - which really grants you access to the Transgaming forums, tech support, etc.  There is no "timeout" in the product itself that disables it if you fail to keep your subscription current.  Prior to getting stuck with my current Windoze laptop I ran Linux exclusively for more than ten years and successfully ran a number of Matrix games under Cedega - TOAW and Carriers at War are two that come to mind.  Anyway, here's the link to the Transgaming site: http://www.transgaming.com/.  It's definitely worth looking into.

Just my $.02,
Ron
