Tree Dog -> Problems with colony development (3/27/2010 2:43:57 PM)

So, hi. :)

I finally understood that colonies revenues (and thus taxes) were related to development, so I decided to expand slowly to let my older colonies develop at a level high enough to support newer colonies, however I ran into some troubles. At start, I just colonized 3 planets, started mining with my constructors, and everything went fine, population increased rapidly, revenues, values and development did too.
I then started to colonize other worlds, and it still went fine, but I then realized that the development value of one of my colonies was decreasing, I just decreased the tax rates and continued playing, but, 2 years later, development dropped from 47 to 9, and I'm rather sure it was even higher before. That colony's revenues, taxes and values then decreased too, it just got worthless, value dropped to 38K, revenues to 6K...
And now, development started to drop on another of my planets (one of the second wave of colonies), and it seems that development have globally lowered on every of my other planets by some points.

I have access to different luxury resources, I have supplies for all the one that are demanded, but two, could this be the cause of that drop in development ? But even then, I have supplies for half a dozen luxury goods that aren't demanded at all, although I'd probably have enough to keep up with the demand...

Am I completely missing something or is there a bug somewhere ?

Hi Tree Dog,

We've been investigating this very issue since release now and I can say a few things:

1. There is an issue in how luxury resources are being distributed that slipped by us and we think we've fixed it now, we'll know for sure in the next day as we try it out on the saves that have been sent in. So worst case, just hang on a bit and there will be an update very soon.

2. If you are managing your economy well and not over-building, this will resolve itself in time. As long as you don't have any fundamental problems in the rest of your economy and you aren't missing any key strategic resources, your other colony development levels will start to rise and your economy will correct itself after a while in the red. This is really only an issue during the initial period where your new colonies are dependent on your initial home world and the drop in the home world's development causes the issue.

Regards,

- Erik

Well, thanks, I think I'll just wait a bit then and put that game on hold. :)

Well, I did try not to overbuild, or overcolonize, and I do have enough of every strategic resource I need. And although that seriously hurts my economy, I'm still not in the red, I "just" passed from +50K to +20K or so.
Also, I started colonizing again only when each of my three first colonies' value/population/revenue would be at around 2/3rd of those of my homeworld , should be enough, right ?

Tree Dog,

If you keep playing, you should see things recover over time even without the update, but it will probably be red for a while once that has started. From what you describe, you didn't do anything wrong. If you want to upload a save for us to test against, feel free (instructions are in the tech support forum) and if we spot anything you were doing wrong we'll let you know.

Regards,

- Erik

I see.
Well, I'll continue playing, then, hope it's going to increase again soon.
And I'll keep the savegame to myself, you probably have enough to analyze already. :)

Thanks a lot.
