kingwanabee -> Bases (3/27/2010 2:55:24 PM)

How close do I need to build my research and resort bases to the various anomilies to get the full effect? I sent a constructor towards a black hole to build a base and it disappeared. I didn't see what happened, but I can only assume that it got sucked into the black hole. Shouldn't this be automated? You'd expect the crew of a ship to be aware of how close they can get to a supernova, neutron star, black hole, etc, without being destroyed.

Anyway, how do I find out where to place these bases for maximum effect? Thanks

Webbco -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 2:59:25 PM)

Not sure about resorts but my construction ships built 2 research stations by a neutron star automatically.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 3:00:52 PM)

The overriding rule is that if you manually tell them to go to a place, they will go there. I guess they didn't realize they had crossed the event horizon. As far as getting the research bonus, you just need to place it right next to the black hole. If you zoom in and click on the black hole, you can see how far its boundaries extend and place the base just outside those. Alternately, if you are zoomed out you can just right click on the black hole marker while the construction ship is selected and tell them to build a base there and they will automatically put it just outside the event horizon.

Thanks, Erik.

If I colonize a planet that has a scenic location will I gain the benefits of of tourism there, or do I still need a resort base?

If I colonize a planet that already has a mining base, can I dismantle that base and still get the resources?

Webbco -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 6:53:04 PM)

You cannot interact with mining bases as they are owned by the private sector, so it means you can't scrap a discovered base either (as far as I'm aware). I tried to do this myself to cut down on maintenance costs but I couldn't!

Huh,it is called a private industry for a reason.You cannot meddle in their affairs.

Webbco -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 7:18:30 PM)

Understandable and I agree, but if you're using some sort of automation and it's having a massive detrimental effect on the economy, then something needs to be done! Especially if that mining base is extracting gas/minerals you already have a ton of and there are other resources/goods that are in demand.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 7:19:22 PM)

Let's revisit this after the economy fix, I think you'll find that this will be less of a concern in your games once that gets sorted out.

Not everybody^ is having massive issues wih the economy and the supposed bug is fixed.So take your commie ideas elsewhere.[:)]

If you colonize a planet with a mining base the base is automatically dismantled from what I've seen.

What about this question?
Thanks for the replies.

Bahh another capitalist pig [;)]. I'm looking forward to that patch!

Ashbury, can I ask you what your start settings were? I'm wondering if the fact that some people are not having these issues are based around how they start a game.

ASHBERY76 -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 7:31:34 PM)

I played on a large 1000 galaxy,with lowest tech,normal starting planet.

Flaviusx -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 7:31:41 PM)

Noob question: how do you tell if a location is scenic or not, I can't figure that out.

If you click on something like a black hole it will say "Scenic: N%" in the window in the lower left of the screen. I assume the percent is the bonus to putting a resort base there. Well in the case of a black hole "near" there but not too close! [:'(]

hadberz -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 8:51:55 PM)

I placed a resort little bit away from the black hole, right now there are 452K tourist on board. I don't think you need to be super close to get the benefits from the black hole. I'm making 8K from tourism and this is my only resort.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 9:03:02 PM)

Note that using the "galaxy map" screen, you can also see all research and scenic locations at a glance using the drop down options. You can click through them on the galaxy map screen for details.

Sorry to be pest, but does anyone know? [&:][:)]

Erik Rutins -> RE: Bases (3/27/2010 9:46:05 PM)

Hi King,

I'm not actually sure off the top of my head, I was going to test it to see and haven't had time yet. I know that in general the resort bases represent the type of major tourism infrastructure that it takes to pull in galactic tourism and make money off it. But, this may be built into worlds with scenic locations too... I don't think so though.

Regards,

- Erik

No tourism benefits without resort bases - those tourists still want the comforts of home, even when they're enjoying nature [;)]
