Geo the Elder -> Setting retreat hexes on custom maps for spwaw (7/15/2002 8:25:19 AM)

Question...How can you set the retreat hexes on custom maps for spwaw. I have set them but when calling up the map for an email battle they are reset. Down right embarrasing for troops to retreat in the direction of the enemy.

Sorry, I'm not responding with a solution, but this is beyond embarassment --- it's intolerable! I've played 2 full games where BOTH armies retreat in the OPPOSITE direction --- WHAT's the DEAL?

Not sure 100%, but this should make the trick:

edit the map you want to play with; on the right panael, scroll down and find the button with two arrows, one blue and the other green; keep the mouse pointer on it for a while and it will tell you which nation is considered on which side of the map. Probably this info doesn't match with the actual deployment of yr pbem.In this case it is "normal" also for the retreat flags not te be on the right side. If this is the case, just click on the button to switch sides, and it SHOULD be done.

Hope this is the case, otherwise, well, I tried :)

Thanks for the feedback. I have set the side start button and the start lines at the same time as the retreat hexes. I then go to the save map in the map editor before using the map in an email battle. The side are on the correct sides as well as the start lines but the retreat hexes have moved from were they were set. This made more difficult since you cannot see it until you have gone thru the buy and deploy. You can see it only after starting the first move. Any input is welcomed....still:confused:

Update on retreat hexes. The best I can determine is that player one retreats to the left side and player two retreats to the right side. This is independent from the side start select button in the map editor as well as to where the retreat hexes are set manually. I was incorrect in not being able to see them in deploy since the retreat hexes are marked... :o I do not know if this is the same in scenario set up since I focus on pbem games. Any hints as to who in the game design could be contacted to see if this can be fixed? I looked to see if this was an old topic and had been beat to death but did not find any thing (which is not to say it is not there). If not I will drop this thread and remain....

Yeh I've been fooling with this for the last year or so and can get it to work most of the time. I think that the way the sides are set up when the map is created affects the retreat flags. If it is Axis left and start with Allies right going second(Last), then the only way I have found to change them when you are playing a random battle with the Allies first and left and the Axis last and right is to build a scenario with the sides set the way you want your battle. Load the map you want to use then set the retreat flags using the numbers ( page 185 or so of the manual, I think). Now save the scenario and reload it. Save the map from the scenario editor deploy screen. It should have the Retreat flags in the right place. I've done this with 2 of Mosh's maps and one of mine and it worked all 3 times. I have no Idea why and if you find a simpler way, please let me know.
T.

Thanks for the input but I did not understand the reference to saving the map in the scenario editor deploy screen. You can only save a scenario and not a map from that screen. Here are the steps I go thru. In PBEM section, pull up the editor screen and load custom map. In map edit, set retreat hexes using the 0 thru 9 keys as well as set the side start selection. Save map and enter the deploy screen to edit any victory hex or start line changes. Save as a scenario and return to main editor screen. Return to Map edit and save map again. May do this a couple of times to make sure, but that has more to do with being a bit anal at times. Exit editor screen and go to Battle set up screen. Set varibles and use custom map as designed selection.

I have used variations of who is player 1 and 2, starting side settings, retreat hex settings and start line settings. Everything but retreat hexes comes out as planned (except that weather, visibility and lenght seem to have a will of their own at times, but that is another bone for another time) :( Player one will retreat to the left and player two will retreat to the right no matter what I have set up.

Am I missing some step?
