Nebogipfel -> So many Scenarios.................. (3/29/2010 10:57:02 AM)

When I look at the scenario list, I guess I can play harpoon the entire lifetime (guess HCE even has some more.....). [:)]
Btw. , the value you get for the money is amazing. (Compared with modern Blockbuster games, where you pay over 50€ (europe) for 10 hours gaming time.
Thanks to all the scenario builders out there.

At the moment Iīm playing the "georgien" scens, I think they were made by you Hermanhum..., thx.
Maybe they are not typical beginner scenarios but they offer great opportunities to play around with the mission editor.

Yesterday I set up all my missions (first georgien scen) and then I run into the "ac not launching" bug. [:@] Maybe I changed the mission settings to often. Anyhow I had fun.

I don't know about other designers, but just knowing that someone is playing and enjoying my scenarios is enough encouragement for me to continue writing them.

You certainly chose an interesting battleset with which to learn the game! Those scenarios are fairly big battles and very complex with a large variety of units. That entire battleset was written as the Georgian War unfolded in Real Time. Scenarios were released within days of Real Life events being reported in the actual war. Freek Schepers was very kind to test those scenarios for your benefit.

I don't know what might be wrong with your Missions, but I think that they may not have triggered because certain conditions were not fulfilled. For example, if planes are assigned to an Air Intercept mission, they will only launch if there is a detected enemy contact. That means that Yellow (unknown identity) air contacts will not cause those planes to launch. Only definitely known hostile contacts (Red) will trigger those missions.

All I can recommend is to re-read the manual regarding the creation of AI-controlled missions for your units. And, if all else fails, go to manual control. [;)]

Nebogipfel -> RE: Harpoon 3 [ANW] scenarios for the PlayersDB (3/29/2010 12:44:45 PM)

Ok, I think that was one of my failures. Didnt know that with the air interdiction, so I dont have to be surprised if AC assigned to an intercept mission dont launch [8|].

It quite interesting playing scenarios with a current backround. I ask me where you get the OOBīs form. Must be difficult.

I printed the whole manual some days ago. Reminds me the old dayīs reading big Microprose Manuals before sleeping.
But sometimes I just play, without the patience to read what I should do .

The OoBs were fairly easy to find as the headlines were just screaming about which ships were heading to the Black Sea. For example, one description was came straight out of the newspaper headlines:
On 13 August, 2008, President Bush directed the United States Navy to oversee a "rigorous and ongoing" air and naval humanitarian mission to Georgia.

20 August, 2008, DDG McFaul, WHEC Dallas, and LCC Mount Whitney were soon enroute to Georgia after picking up aid supplies in Crete.

21 August, 2008, Russian forces block the only land entrance to the Georgian port of Poti after vowing to withdraw troops the day before.
and even included links to NATO's website showing which ships were in StaNavForLant (now known as Standing NATO Maritime Group) [http://www.seawaves.com/fleets/naval%20fleets/nato/navforlant.htm].

If you like scenarios written from current headlines, you might want to check out "Serpent's Island" under the Black Sea battleset. That scenario was written within days of the International Court ruling being released.

After a couple of defeats (playing Ukraine), I will give Serpentīs Island a try tomorrow.
Maybe I focused too much on defending Oktyabrskoye.

Seawaves seems to be a good source for naval news

I managed to win the first scenario, Georgian, in H3.  I do not know how it works in ANW.  I had to micro-manage my assets for the victory.  I do not think it is possible to win if you simply assign your units to missions as the AI tends to rush in and get itself killed.  You will need all your skills at stealth and guile to win it, IMO.  However, I agree that you need to concentrate on defending Oktyabrskoye in order to succeed.  Tally ho!  [8D]

Nebogipfel -> RE: Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB (3/30/2010 12:28:20 PM)

Thatīs exactly what happend to me. My Flankers and Fulcrums where sacrified in order to defend Oktyabrskoy,( persecuted contacts and followed them into nirvana). Mainly for the mentioned ACīs I will plot a manual course next try.

Second thing was a lack on AA ordonance in Oktyabrskoy. I ordered the surviving aircrafts to Oktyabrskoy, only to recognize that they couldnīt be equipped the way I wanted to.

The number of attacking acīs is huge, so I decided to make a ground strike on the southern airport, but it ended in a desaster.   [:(]

Other occasion would be, to give up Oktyabrskoye and save aircrafts.

Many opportunities, great fun.

To find out what aircraft ordnance is available at a base, you:

1) Hit 9 on the NumPad to switch the map display to Unit Display
2) Select the Ammo Dump
3) Hit the Report button from the Unit Status menu

As you can see, there are 0/30000 munitions at this dump meaning that it is empty.

Good luck on your next try. [8D]

Nebogipfel -> RE: Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB (3/30/2010 12:58:52 PM)

thanks, great service [;)]

Do I use paratroopers the same way as ground strikes ?
The briefing said something about technicans, so I didnt play around with them.

hermanhum -> Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB (3/30/2010 1:20:12 PM)

In most instances, you are correct.  Paratroops / soldiers are just another type of ordnance or weapon and you "fire" them at targets.

However, for the purposes of this particular scenario, your transports are supposedly pre-loaded with technicians and crews.  The orders state that you must get them to the base and have them 'work' on the bombers for four hours before you can launch them and take them back to the Ukraine.

This is a scenario design technique implemented to prevent you from:

1) Immediately launching the bombers at the start of the game
2) Launching the bombers as soon as your technicians arrive at the base

In this way, the AI has a better chance to make your life miserable as you simulate some real life restrictions.  [:D]

Nebogipfel -> RE: Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB (3/30/2010 1:34:47 PM)

"miserable" seems to be the right word  [:(]

Nebogipfel -> RE: Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB (4/13/2010 9:37:51 AM)

After getting my butt kicked several times in georgia [:(],
I humbly decided, to go to the papa & sons, hehe.

Nooby question: If I set up an air to ship/ground strike, do I have to take daytime/night into consideration?
My thoughts were, that with use of modern sensors the daytime becomes obsolete.

This is a game limitation in H3 and ANW. The game cannot take night time conditions into account. In real life, some planes are limited to Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and thus cannot be used at night. The game is unable to reflect this restriction. If a target is detected, localized, and identified as hostile, the mission will launch regardless of day/light conditions.

The time of day might play a role in when the target will be spotted. i.e. some targets that are easily detected/classified during the day will require you to get very close to do the same at night due to the reduced visibility

Nebogipfel -> RE: Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB (4/13/2010 9:56:30 AM)

Thanks hermanhum,

so for the most part I donīt have to think much about it.

In the mission editor is a box named "pursuit radius", if I type in a 1. Does it mean 1 degree, 1 nm .....or anything else?

hermanhum -> Harpoon 3 scenarios for the PlayersDB (4/13/2010 10:02:33 AM)

I believe that the pursuit radius is measured in nautical miles (nm).  AFAIK, it means that the units assigned to that mission may leave their assigned area if a contact is detected within the pursuit radius from their patrol zone.  Personally, I have not tested this feature to determine if it functions or not.  See:

ASW Mission Pursuit Radius
