Joubarbe -> Unhandled Exception (3/29/2010 5:27:33 PM)

Hi,

When I launch the game, I have an unhandled exception error window. DX & NET is updated. All drivers updated. No antivirus.

Thx

Webbco -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/29/2010 5:44:21 PM)

Hi Joubarbe, welcome.

Have you downloaded the 2 patches for the game?

Joubarbe -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/29/2010 7:01:01 PM)

Yes, 1.02 now

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/29/2010 10:24:31 PM)

Hi Joubarbe,

Did you allow the .NET and DirectX that came with the game installer to install fully?

Could you post a DxDiag file for us please per the instructions at the top of this forum?

Did you see any difference after updating to 1.0.2?

Regards,

- Erik

Joubarbe -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/29/2010 11:20:42 PM)

Yes full install... I already had the 1.02 :)

atlana -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/30/2010 4:54:09 PM)

exact same problem here. Tried even the REGION/KEYBOARD workaround that seemed to work for some people, but no luck.

Attached is my DXDIAG output. I have let run the installers DirectX and .NET 3.5 installation processes. I've version 1.02 installed. Mine is the DigitalRiver digital download version.

Audio and Video drivers are up to date. Even tried with Kaspersky Internet Security suite 2010 turned OFF (exited). also no luck.

my system is a windows 7 64bit Enterprise Edition EVGA X58 3x SLI mainboard i7 core CPU 12 GB DDR3 Ram Nvidia GTX295 (revision B) Logitech G19 Keyboard Logitech G500 Mouse Logitech G35 Headset

Ricomise -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/30/2010 6:33:34 PM)

I had a similar error, and after some research (with help from Eric and Elliot on these forums) and an e-mail to microsoft, it apperas that it was a problem with installing .NET 3.5 SP1 because of a corrupted or damaged file in an older version on my machine.

Microsoft recommended this tool to remove the damaged components: http://cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Blog_Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip

After running that and re-installing .NET 3.5 and the 3.5 service pack, I was good to go. I don't know if yours is the same issue, but may be worth a try.

Good luck.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/30/2010 6:49:04 PM)

Thank you for the reminder on that, Ricomise and I'm glad to hear it fixed things for you.

Joubarbe and Atlana, it could be that your .NET installation is corrupted. Can you try Ricomise's suggestion and also those in the threads here:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2414263 http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2414508

Joubarbe -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/30/2010 10:05:15 PM)

Ok.. I just tried to erase .NET and reinstall it from the Distant Worlds menu. No effects, still the error message. Maybe it's switched off or maybe this is because I don't have Windows Media Player, but my "turn windows features on/off" is empty and I tried all the solutions (Microsoft said : "install Windows 7 again"...)

Anyway, it is very strange that THIS specific game can't launch... I think there is something you can do from your side, no games are crashing for that.

atlana -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/30/2010 11:13:51 PM)

I concur with Joubarbe - did the same thing, used the .NET cleaner tool, which removed quite an array of " leftovers" after uninstalling it from the windows7 "Turn Windows Features On or Off". then went to http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/6/1/061F001C-8752-4600-A198-53214C69B51F/dotnetfx35setup.exe to re-install it, just to be notified that i've to re-install it via the "Turn Windows Features On or Off"-feature. Re-installed it through that but still the same "unhandled exception" error.

other suggested links failed to get it running either.

any more ideas ?

atlana -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/30/2010 11:46:44 PM)

I think i found the problem, I read somewhere that WindowsMediaPlayer was needed, out of a hunch i re-enabled it in the "Turn Windows Features On or Off" menu, in windows7. I've per DEFAULT WindowsMediaPlayer killed out of my system, since I percieve it as a crappy bloatware, and use VLC for video and AIMP2 as audio player.

The problem is that Distand Worlds DEPENDS on the WindowsMediaPlayer and the installer FAILS to check for it. What for, eludes me, since Windows from XP upwards allows to playback videos via directshow (part of directX) filters/codecs. So, why the DEPENDENCE on the WindowsMediaPlayer? I know that appropriate codecs and filters are installed. Matter of fact every other game over the past years (I'm a hardcore gamer) worked fine without the WindowsMediaPlayer and used the VLC-installed codecs/filters instead.

My question remains - Why the dependance on the WindowsMediaPlayer ?

darkrenown -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/31/2010 12:38:43 AM)

I have media player turned on, got this anyway. Game was running, got about half way through designing a ship and it crashed. As far as I know all my drivers etc are up to date, but DXdiag is attached). The game is actually still running after the crash, I can play with the UI but the main map is just blank white with a red X through it, like a massive image that has failed to load.

Yes, DW does need Windows Media Player although it does also use DirectX. Elliot would have to comment on the exact reason for the dependency, but it's not that unusual to use something that's standard in Widnows. I didn't think to ask about that as it's normally enabled by default and installed with Windows by default. You're right that we should update the installer to check for it in more detail.

Joubarbe, could you try updating your system to the latest Windows Media Player 11 and make sure it's enabled as well to see if that helps for you?

Was this also with 1.0.2?

Could you if possible upload a save file for us?

Your video driver seems to have no version or date in your DxDiag - when did you last update it, could you try reinstalling the latest video driver please?

Joubarbe -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/31/2010 3:18:27 AM)

Ok it's finally working for me :) Previously, when I tried to install WMP, either the installation file said "wrong windows version", or said "use your - windows features on/off - screen" which one was empty. This time I used this file : http://www.blogsdna.com/2409/downgrade-windows-media-player-12-to-wmp-11-on-windows-7.htm and curiously it's working.

Thank you for your help, even if I can assure you that from your side, you have to do something to make your game independant of WMP :)

EDIT : the main menu music is the same that the one of Geopolitical Simulator, funny :)

atlana -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/31/2010 3:29:17 AM)

same problem like DarkRenown has above after playingfor ~2 hours. Mine was saying that i'dnt have enough 'storage/writing space' ??? which is actually laughable, with 40 GB free on my OS-drive, 126 GB free on the drive i've Distant Worlds installed, and my G19-keyboard/EVEREST ULTIMATE showing that 70% of my 12 GB Ram were not even used.

I smell a major memory leak hole? :P

EDIT: i managed to save the state-of-the-galaxy (save-game) when the JIT .NET compiler crashed on me (like it did with DarkRenown), and apparently save-game loaded fine after game crash-n-reload.

Yes, this was a new game with 1.02. I don't have a save, I'd just started a new game, ordered some colony ships, started making a design and it crashed. Odd the video drivers have no date, but they're whatever was newest 2 weeks ago when I built this computer. I see ATI put out newer ones on the 24th though, so I'll try them just in case.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/31/2010 3:55:06 PM)

Darkrenown,

I discussed your crash with Elliot and he had the following comments (so far):

"This looks like it may be a bug in Windows: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/108996/gdi-accessviolationexception

I would suggest: - ensure they are up-to-date with Windows fixes/patches, especially any service packs for .Net (e.g. .Net 2.0 SP1) - disable any antivirus that is running.

I can try some extra stuff in the next patch that may minimize the likelihood of seeing this bug - it appears to happen under specific circumstances according to that link."

Erik Rutins -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/31/2010 3:56:34 PM)

One more question for you, Darkrenown.

What zoom level were you playing at when this happened?

darkrenown -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/31/2010 8:45:49 PM)

It was almost fully zoomed in, although as I said I was on the ship design screen at the time.

No AV software was running.

Windows is fully up-to-date (in fact it just updated itself again today). Are the .net updates included in windows updates, or would I have to look for them seperately? Although it should be the latest version anyway as the PC is only 2 weeks old and I installed the latest .net along with all the drivers etc.

atlana -> RE: Unhandled Exception (3/31/2010 9:47:00 PM)

it happened again, same problem that Darkrenown has - screenshot here. I'd love to upload the save-game file, but it's ~24 MB in size :D

what did i do ? nothing other than zooming all the way into a star system to look at it's planets' details.

cheers @

Atlana, please see the instructions at the top of this forum for uploading save files if you have a save file and a way to replicate this.

putzinator -> RE: Unhandled Exception (4/1/2010 12:44:28 AM)

I'm having a similar problem as atlana in the picture. It seems to happen intermittently, usually when I am zooming in and out quickly with my mouse.

See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging ************** To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this application or computer (machine.config) must have the jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section. The application must also be compiled with debugging enabled.

For example:

<configuration>

<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" /> </configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Grotius -> RE: Unhandled Exception (4/1/2010 3:36:28 AM)

I have been getting "unhandled exceptions" when I click on certain menu buttons, especially the button for construction. If I click continue, the game doesn't crash, but I'm still unable to get access to the construction screen. I think it just happened with a different, screen, too.

I'll try reloading a save to see if I can reproduce it, and perhaps post more info here.

Grotius,

Are you running v1.0.2?

Grotius -> RE: Unhandled Exception (4/1/2010 4:47:58 AM)

I think so; I just bought the game yesterday, and I thought I noticed v 1.02 somewhere. But I'll double-check next time I fire up the game -- probably tomorrow.

serptex -> RE: Unhandled Exception (4/1/2010 9:35:31 AM)

I get all these errors even with a small sized galaxy on 1.02 and virtually nothing happening. I had hoped it would be ok in a small map but evidently not. Still completely unplayable.

Gertjan -> RE: Unhandled Exception (4/1/2010 12:30:35 PM)

I also got my first unhandled exception problem today. Perhaps the game is running out of memory?

Leon Shirow -> RE: Unhandled Exception (4/1/2010 12:55:35 PM)

I am still on my first game and I have had the unhandled exception problem several times. Sometimes you can click on continue, then save the game, restart, load the save and continue. This has worked 50% of the time for me. If it has not saved correctly the save game will be a lot smaller. Seem to have hit a brick wall now though, my last save is over 120MB and nothing I try will get it to load.

I am also getting an unhandled exception. I am on xp, and i have updated my .Net and my WMP.
