MikeBrough -> Infantry squad game (3/31/2010 7:43:01 PM)

Guys

I'm looking for a squad game, like Laser Squad or UFO, that allows me to control individual soldiers in a 'realistic' way. I'm aware of the HPS Squad Battles games. Anyone aware of any others?

Obsolete -> RE: Infantry squad game (3/31/2010 8:05:14 PM)

Mike, there is Talonsoft's Rising Sun.  I took a look at it just now after reading your post.  Something I didn't notice until just now, is there isn't even a screen shot anywhere on the front or back of the case.  Anyhow, it probably doesn't run on modern OSes, but I'll try and give it a quick test soon to see how far I can get.  I'm rather curious myself here.

Obsolete -> RE: Infantry squad game (3/31/2010 8:25:08 PM)

Ok I am an idiot, I just realized that Rising Sun is in John Tiller’s Campaign series.

I tried to run the original Talonsoft CD here, no go.  I was afraid of that, since that publisher had a very nasty problem by always using a NO-COPY protection scheme, that would render install of the game totally impossible if used on an updated OS that the programmers had no knowledge of.

While I often felt saddened to see Talonsoft go under, after looking at my collection of useless Talonsoft Cds here, I almost feel a little happy about it in some way as getting revenge.

I’m just not sure anymore if this was truly squad level, or a higher platoon issue.

Jeffrey H. -> RE: Infantry squad game (3/31/2010 8:35:17 PM)

Sounds like Close Combat to me....

DampSquib -> RE: Infantry squad game (3/31/2010 8:35:34 PM)

Err...don't know if this fit what ya want but anyhoo....
Silent storm...Jagged Alliance 2.....Faces of war ....Men of war..
As Jeffrey H.say's Close Combat...any be that TLD..ABTF....WAR...or..COI.

wodin -> RE: Infantry squad game (3/31/2010 11:37:19 PM)

Squad Battles is one of my favourite serie sta this level. Then you have the Close Comabt series and Achtung Panzer Kharkov 1943 by Graviteam. However I understand what you want BUT I don't think a realistic game where you control each squad member has been made. Its a game I'd buy if done right. There is Silent Storm but its hardly realistic. Many moons ago I had a game Soldiers at War it was called at the time I enjoyed it.

Also there was 101st Airborne by Shrapnel Games....the follow up has been promised for years and is I presume vapourware ( shame really).
We do need a new game along these lines that is realistic and fun. I'd be over the moon if a game like 101st Airborne was made with a better UI and graphics.

So for what you really want your out of luck I'm afraid. Unless someone knows something I don't.

Not sure John Tillers campaign series is what your looking for.

There are none whatosever.

There is a game named 82nd Airborne which has now been in production for 11 years and doesn't look like being released any time soon !

jomni -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/1/2010 12:13:22 AM)

Squad battles does not have a man-to-man scale as preferred by the original post.
One unit is a squad despite the face icon.
But the squad can do X-Com like stuff like crouch, pick up and drop weapons...

Best bet are the Russian Jagged Alliance clones.

Exactly what I said above....(82nd airborne is the sequel to 101st airborne which I said was most likely vapourware)

The man is out of luck...like I said above I'd like a game like that myself.

rickier65 -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/1/2010 12:40:17 AM)

it seems like Close Combat series comes close though, the Longest day i think?

MikeBrough -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/1/2010 6:48:56 AM)

Everyone, thanks for the replies and suggestions. I'm quite surprised that nothing exists at this scale - even a straghtforward conversion of Avalon Hill's Firepower boardgame would have suited. I think SPI's Soldiers was similar. I wonder if there are any VASSAL modules for these games: Geeklist - time to find out.

Methinks there's a niche going unfilled...

NefariousKoel -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/1/2010 7:56:37 AM)

Individual Soldiers was the key thing he mentioned (like UFO).

Silent Storm 2  http://www.silentstorm-online.de/content.php?lang=en&rid=600

Or Matrix' own Hired Guns:Jagged Edge perhaps?  http://www.matrixgames.com/products/364/details/Hired.Guns:.The.Jagged.Edge.

Nebogipfel -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/1/2010 2:51:20 PM)

Hi all,

on the dvg site you will find a vassal squad game, "special forces".
Don´t know how it play´s.

If you liked x-com, you may like "Incubation", one of my favorite squad games back in the 90´s.

There´s a german site http://taktikzone.de . Most squad based games are listed there on the left side. Even if you don´t understand the language, you can have a look at the screenshots.

Wolfe1759 -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/1/2010 3:05:46 PM)

Jagged Alliance or more likley Jagged Alliance 2 (and supplements) may be worth a look for a modern (ie 1980's and 1990's) mercenary turn based squad game. Also you can pick then up pretty cheaply and Vista compatable (if you need that) at gog.com.

wodin -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/1/2010 5:41:03 PM)

There was a Russan game called Alfa Anti Terror ...they released a demo whih showed promise. Not sure if the game ever got released though. Was the scale your looking for.

rahamy -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/1/2010 6:14:21 PM)

You can make custom OOB's & scenarios with singal man uint is SB if you wish. The newest updates add the "Fire Team" level to the OOB which is really meant to be 3 men, but can be singles if you wish.

I have a 90% finished Firepower module for vassal somewhere... Had auto-overlays for the "town" map and auto-height unit calculations based on terrain and unit. I had all the mechanics worked out except for some tunneling-map issues. The only thing it needed to be playable (sans truly-hidden tunneling and tunnel exploring) was to throw in more units.

If you don't mind retro-gaming, there was Soldiers at War and for ultra-retro-gaming there was Computer Ambush.

I remember Computer Ambush - the $2000 wargame! I lusted after that game in the early 80s. And here we are, 30 years on, games are generations better and more detailed - and we're still disatisfied with what we've got.

Actually, an updated version of Computer Ambush is exactly what I'm looking for.

Nothing on the PC of recent times but take a look at DVG's new Frontline D-Day - in the spirit of Avalon Hill's Upfront but with some promising innovation. I'm getting hold of my copy in a couple of days.

There's also GMT's Fields of Fire but it's rulebook has come under some heavy criticism and I believe is about to be re-written.

gunny -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/2/2010 2:11:12 AM)

As already mentioned Matrix's Hired Guns if you want a turned based squad level game based on the jagged alliance theme.

or if you don't mind pausible real time then 7.62 High Caliber is a fairly new game with a big cult following.

Zakhal -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/2/2010 2:48:15 AM)

Ufo extraterrestrial gold 18,99€ from steam.

$2000? I thought the $60 I paid was steep! LOL I still play it occasionally (one of many reasons why I am against any acceptance of any always-online or online-activation DRM's)... although I doubt anyone here could stand typing in orders like "MR24R" (Move Regular in direction 2 for 4 squares while running) or my favorite... "FA0199" (fire at anything with more than a 1% chance to hit for 99 time points *grin*). Heck, I've seen people openly admit that if a game isn't pretty, they can't play it. *shrug*

Now just to clarify, you do know they made a machine language version that runs a WHOLE lot faster, right? *grin*

CA was a great game ! Witht he grease pencil and the various personality types, a very rich and interesting experience. Nothing like it today, but to be honest, the closest thing I have see to CA these days is the Close Combat series.

V22 Osprey -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/2/2010 5:17:01 AM)

Suprised noone has mentioned the Steel Panthers series. SPWAW, WinSPWW2, and WinSPMBT are all great Squad level games.

Ah yes, the grease pencil... I actually did a vassal module for Computer Ambush. *grin* Dunno about Close Combat, RTS games are non-starters for me. I do know it was popular when it first came out and seems to still be around even now.

Probably because the term "squad level" is often used, but "man to man" is often meant, as evidenced by the original post that asked for control of individual soldiers. Which is of course beneath the scope of Steep Panthers.

TAIL GUNNER -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/2/2010 12:39:17 PM)

What about Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines?

Tough game, but you do control every soldier's actions...

Looks like there were a couple of sequels too...

MajFrankBurns -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/2/2010 2:23:14 PM)

What about Eric Young's Squad Assault?

wodin -> RE: Infantry squad game (4/2/2010 4:09:06 PM)

Yeah the Commandos series was cool.....but more puzzle orientated than combat...i.e use one to sneak...another to lift etc etc.

As I and someone lese mentioned the last WW2 game was Soldiers at War.. Infact when I got that game it led me to the wargamer website and then onto here and The Blitz.

I think I remember reading it was a complete letdown? Something along the lines of being far more arcade than initially advertised?

Oh it was much improved after patch 1.08 I don't see the arcade in it at all.
