Primarily interested in the relation between Construction Bays and Manufacturing Centers. I am assuming that the more MCs you build the faster your CBs convert resources into components, but is there some cap?

The galactopedia suggests one of each MC per CB, yet the AI designs do not do this. Of course advanced MCs generate more 'capacity', but what is the desired ratio for CB capacity to MC capacity? Or is it simply 'more is always better'?

I'm curious about this as well, as including one manufacturing center per bay makes a station get very large very fast.

What i find also interesting is that the default spaceport designs don't follow this rule. The starting spaceport has eight construction yards but only four of each manufacturing center. It is probably the same with the smaller models, but I don't remember for sure.

Building more than strictly required of these shouldn't hurt too much, unless they are also really expensive to maintain. I think it may come down to these 'capacity' ratings that shipyards and the manufacturing centers have. If (what should never happen) all of a ship's parts were in the industrial area, you'd probably need an according capacity in industrial manufacturing centers to have the yard build the ship at full speed.

This leads to a question: How is manufacturing on a planet handled? Do their manufacturing centers have infinite capacity (or the equivalence of a capacity of whatever the planetside spaceyard has for each area) or are they limited but can draw on unused capacity of the spaceport, if any?

Constructor ships have one of each manufacturing center, except for industrial (four, IIRC?). This should be massive overkill for one spaceyard, under my above hypothesis. Maybe the industrial centers can be relevant for something else? I have to admit, that I didn't read much of the galactopedia yet.

Industrial Centers produce industrial components, Constructors have a lot of them because they construct mostly industrial components, mines need a lot of them for example :)

Yes, this makes sense for constructors, but I think we are lacking in some clarity on what optimal is (or if there really even is optimal).

My concern isn't even so much for my own designs as it is for the AI designs, because as has been noted, the AI tends to make some rather poor design choices when it autodesigns ships, so I figure this is a large (potentially) handicap for the AI races.

This really depends on what kind of ships you are producing at the shipyards. Ships that needs lots of industrial parts would benefit from having more centers that produce them, If you produce lots of warships then weapon centers would help a bit.

That being said, I am missing some way to determine if the spaceyards are running at capacity or if they have reduced speed due to not enough centers or materials..
