Jzanes -> Western Allies using Russian bases and vice versa (4/2/2010 4:15:15 AM)

My opponent has attacked russia in May 1942. Three questions;

1. Does the game allow the western allies (US, UK, Australia, etc.) to use russian bases for refueling, supply, flying airstrikes, etc.? and vice versa, can the russians use other allied bases?
2. will supply flow to or from russian bases to china?
3. do you think it would be gamey to have the russians and western allies use each other's bases. I am biased but I would say it's ok as I believe Stalin would loosen up more than a little if he has the germans AND the japanese coming at him in 1942.

thanx in advance for any input.

Actually supply would have been dificult as Western and Eastern rail lines were not comparable with each other. Completely different guage of rail lines. Sharing ports and air bases is feasable however.

ok, remember he did not ask a ? about history, but about the game, and as the game does not model rail details... no desstroyed or gaufge, just rail, or no rail... This is agreat ? and we should find out from the devs or mods what happens re the sov's... would be interesting to see the sino soviet forces cooperating, not realistic but remember , its a game and we are not shooting for ultimate realism..
SO what happens? the world awaits? lol

I agree that there's a very reasonable argument for letting other Allies' LBA being based at Soviet bases in the event of a Japanese attack on the far East. This is precisely why it's national sepuku for the Japanese to attack BOTH the Soviets *and* the other allies in the game (or had it happened IRL).

Within a month, I think it's very reasonable for the Americans to be basing heavy and medium bombers out of Siberian bases to either fend off the Japanese hordes or to initiate strategic bombing of Japan proper.

For those Japanese players that enjoy ahistoric aggressive risks, this is their comeuppance. Early cooperation of the Russian and American airforces would be catastrophic to the Japanese war effort.

Not gamey. IRL british heavy bomber were based at Russia. For example Avro Lancasters that sunk Tirpitz were flying from airbase near Arkhangelsk.

rader -> RE: Western Allies using Russian bases and vice versa (4/2/2010 5:50:34 PM)

I think a lot of interaction is probably ahistorical even under these situations (for example, very few if any allied units fought in Russia against the Germans, so I don't see why it would be any different here). However, I don't think it's "gamey" under the circumstances, and I don't have a problem with it provided the allied units are of a non-restricted command. It is similar to allied air units being able to operate in China without restriction. Also ahistorical, but probably not much we can do about it. WITP should probably have a wold in flames-like "foreign troop committment" rule that restricts the units operating in a theater to their headquarter location or something using political points. I think this was probably planned through the command idea, but it was never fully fleshed out. Now we have either restricted units with heavy restrictions, or unrestricted with none.

But having read about the so called base 'infrastructure' and the lovely fish-head dinners , I suspect they wished they had stayed at home [;)]

Back OT .. nope not gamey imo. there are some serious consequences to invading Russia for Japan.

Well it was a temporary base...

Actually the last mission that sunk Tirpitz was flied from Scotland. Airstrike that got first Tallboy hit was launched from Russia.

And here I thought this game was trying to be realistic, hee, hee. LOL

Yes, yes, shared air bases and naval bases but never did you see an American or British train on a Russian Rail line, ha, ha,ha. Or Visa Versa. :-)))

freeboy -> RE: Western Allies using Russian bases and vice versa (4/3/2010 12:52:28 AM)

well, my point about rails is it is kinda silly, I land, klnow off some imperial jap troops, and soon after.. like immediately, start using the rail lines! not realistic, but its a GAME!

Your units don't carry their own trains around with them. They would be using local Russian trains!

findmeifyoucan -> RE: Western Allies using Russian bases and vice versa (4/3/2010 3:11:12 AM)

A good game is one that uses a fair bit of realism in it but if there is too much realism then the game becomes unplayable. I think this game is pretty good. Anymore realism and the game would be almost unplayable.
Just a note on Chinese/Russian cooperation. It would happen when hell freezes over. :-)
Yes, local Russian trains on Russian Rail nets. Russian rail lines where a different guage(size) compared to Western Allied so no way they could continue past their own border on Russian trains. Would have to be dropped off at the border for Allied trains.

Yeah, waiting time for moving by rail is a little short. It is more like a week waiting time before they could get onto trains in any large quantity. No unlimited rail movement either. Their were limits according to country and how advanced they were. You could go into rail points, having to tear down one gauge rail line to build you own and all kinds of other stuff but then you'd be making this game unplayable. It is pretty good as it sits overall I think. The best I've seen for War in Pacific in the 40 years I have been playing war games!!!
