Interesting -> What determines maintenance costs? (4/4/2010 4:55:34 PM)

two ships with identical sizes will always have the same maintenance costs?

Does higher technology increases or decreases maintenance cost?

Each individual part affects it by a certain value? Is it percentual? If I choose to use more components of the same type, will it change the efficiency of each maintenance per part?

Im trying to figure out how to build the most efficient ships and thats how I have to understand if there is specific parts/components wich are more or less costly regardless of their size or tech level, just so I can make a different strategy (ships with defenses, ships without defenses, ships with better engines, fuel, etc, it will depend on maintenance costs).

So where in the game can I get those maintenance related answers?

I believe the ship's maintenance cost is a percentage of its total cost

Uhmmm, I just noticed that Shields are very maintenance expensive.

BigWolfChris -> RE: What determines maintenance costs? (4/4/2010 8:45:13 PM)

I also believe costs are related to the price of resources required to build said components

Those dilithium crystals have pwned my maintenance costs more than a couple times

I also presume components have a base cost (think labour) on top of cost of resources

Example, on game start, Corvidian HX100 Shields are 60credits purchase each, with a 40credit maintenance
Yet, the 3 resources needed for it are 0.5 each, with a combined quantity of 15

The calculations doesnt match.

I want to be able to calculate my maintenance costs before hand based on current resources prices and fixed ammount needed for each component

BigWolfChris -> RE: What determines maintenance costs? (4/6/2010 2:52:33 PM)

Indeed, because we don't have access to the actual components file, we actually have no idea what numbers are being placed on top of resource cost

Basically calculation on my above example would mean that the purchase cost for a shield is 7.5 credits... but the cost is actually 60???

So, is the rest actually labour?  Or is the resource calculation just not that simple?
Also, what determines the maintenance cost?  Because it doesn't appear to be a set % for all components, they all differ... again, are they set individually?  Or is this down the other factors?

I read in the manual that the cost is based on the total ammount of components and their individual prices at the time you made them, and for maintenance is at the time of "pay out".

teri -> RE: What determines maintenance costs? (4/26/2010 6:39:41 PM)

it must have something to do with the markets.

i build a fleet of 200cruisers(1,1k maintenance each) and 30capitalships(~3k maintenance each) and my colony tax was about 400k. so everything was fine and my cash pilled up to 800k(during wartime).

now the cruisers have a maintenance cost of > 3k and the capitalships >6k and my colonytax is down to 250k. so i'm 230k in dept with a cashflow of -420k...

so what to do? scrapping a lot of ships would be an option but with the unpolished ui i have to scrap every single ship seperatly, or is there another way?!

Astorax -> RE: What determines maintenance costs? (4/26/2010 8:28:21 PM)

Maintenance costs fluctuate based on market prices of resources. Galaxy-wide resource prices. You may have 100k of Aculon but some schmoe that you never met doesn't have any and he just spiked the cost of Aculon. Congratulations, you have higher maintenance for components that use Aculon even though you still have an overabundance of it.

Sliverine -> RE: What determines maintenance costs? (4/27/2010 12:01:31 AM)

yea that aspect that astorax pointed out doesnt make sense. utilizing galaxy wide resource values for the cost and maintenance of ships/structures shouldnt be right.

yep, i tried to wait it out it nearly worked: cruiser-maint went down to 2k capital-maint to 5k and colony tax up to 725k, so about 100k cashflow. but then the caslon prices rose up: my stock 200k, my demand 160k but galaxy stock 375k galaxy demand 600k. so im paying 220k every year just for the fuel.
