Klahn -> new thread: False sighting reports (4/4/2010 5:09:50 PM)

I think I understand how DL and MDL work, but I'm still not putting together what the purpose of false reports is. If all correct reports result in a red icon being placed on the map, and false reports do not generate an icon, what is the purpose of showing us false reports? We automatically know that they're false. They aren't creating any FoW. Note the difference between inaccurate reports and false reports. I'm talking about false reports such as when my scouts report a 10 ship enemy taskforce near Truk when neither my opponent nor I have anything in the area at all.

AS far as I can tell, not all true reports will show an icon. I have gotten reports of subs around Pearl Harbor and even had a ship hit by a sub, but no icons show up in the area.

Showing the icon is based on detection level. Unfortunately there is no mechanism to show icons for completely false sightings. We'd love to make it fog-of-warrier but not to the extent of ripping out the guts of the display functions.

Okay, that makes more sense. This must mean that some sighting reports are generating a DL of 0.

As long as some true sighting reports are not generating a MDL, the system should work just fine. This would mean one would still have to pay attention to sighting reports even if red icons are not generated. Something "could" be there after all...
