BigWolfChris -> Independents (4/4/2010 9:10:26 PM)

Now, I realize that Independents will turn into Empires if left alone long enough

But, do new Independents rise up?

Wade1000 -> RE: Independents (4/4/2010 9:52:01 PM)

Independents to empires is a game setup option.

BigWolfChris -> RE: Independents (4/4/2010 9:57:08 PM)

You misunderstood my question, I already know that
I mean, do new independents appear as the game goes on?  Or once the game is created, that's it folks?

taltamir -> RE: Independents (4/4/2010 10:00:56 PM)

you mean, can an independent colony form on a previously non occupied planet?

Wade1000 -> RE: Independents (4/4/2010 10:01:05 PM)

I see. I'm not sure if they continue to spawn.

That's the one

I only ask, because I notice on a tiny map with only a few empires, there are only about half a dozen or so, and I'm using the most right option for independents

They seem to be tied into the number of empires... which to me might not be a good thing

Jaimoe_MatrixForum -> RE: Independents (4/4/2010 10:16:50 PM)

Do independents have to belong to one of the races of the active empires in the game? I ask because I am playing a game against all human empires, and so far all of the independent colonies I have encountered have also been human.

BigWolfChris -> RE: Independents (4/4/2010 10:27:06 PM)

I'm noticing that as well tbh

I think some of the "Galaxy Generation" code needs a good look at
Unless you manually create empires, everyone is being put way to close together with half the map having nobody
Independents seem too reliant on number and types of Empires
Way too many of some planet types (Not including Gas since noone can colonize those yet)

Of course, I would fix some of these problems myself with the Editor, but atm too many of us are having problems with the Editor causing crashes down the line

2ndACR -> RE: Independents (4/5/2010 12:14:32 AM)

You can have colonies up and revolt which then become independent etc.......have not seen it from my side yet, but sure do find some near other empires etc.

BigWolfChris -> RE: Independents (4/5/2010 12:23:49 AM)

But aren't they automatically a new empire?
I'm thinking of the independents we can "introduce" to our Empire, ie. to help me acquire certain planet types

Duckfang -> RE: Independents (4/5/2010 12:37:53 AM)

Independents can be from any race; they're aren't limited to the empires in the galaxy.

AFAIK a previously unoccupied world cannot suddenly have independents on it, but a world controlled by another empire can indeed rebel and become independent in its own right. In time, that world may also develop into an empire.

But wouldn't that be abit silly? Surely it makes sense to become an empire off hand, since independents can just be "spammed" with colonists or troops and it's back in your hands

The only real difference, in game terms, between an independent and an empire is that an empire will colonise other systems whereas independents are content to sit on their planet and trade. Perhaps, so soon after separating from a galactic empire, the people of a given colony simply don't want to start spreading out and heading down the same path immediately. They may need to stabilise the local economy and such first, or just lack imperial ambitions.

They could probably do with being a bit more heavily armed than they are so that they aren't just immediately reabsorbed into the empire, but I think it needs to be a very carefully balanced thing since I'd rather than didn't just magic up a bunch of ships and soldiers with which to play havoc on my shipping lanes.

BigWolfChris -> RE: Independents (4/5/2010 1:48:00 AM)

I realize the differences, basically the same between neutrals and empires with Space Empires (except they would completely colonize a system and have a defensive force, and won't ever become an empire)

Personally, I would like the idea of new independents popping up in parts of space not yet having any empire presence (in form of colonies or bases), but don't know if it would be high enough priority or requested enough to actually be included

Wade1000 -> RE: Independents (4/5/2010 4:26:57 AM)

The idea of quickly and easily taking BACK a break away independent is fine. It may be easy but maybe some bad circumstance might come up as a result of diverting forces to handle rebels.

Think of a real life city, even a large one including much territory around it, rebelling from it's nation. A swift reaction from the nation would be likely and easy; but there would be a cost and maybe negative repercussions.
