Can't say I don't disagree with that assessment [:D]

regardless, that is no justification to delete the article.

Yeah. I thought Wikiedia was trying to be the people's repository of everything that is and was in products and such in every minor detail. I suppose I was wrong on that thought now. I think Wikipedia would be better if they were like that.

it started more then a year ago when they ran into funding issues... suddenly they started deleting tons of stuff under the "not sufficiently relevant to warrant a page" clause and other such deletion reasons... nowadays there are tons of things that i have to Google for because Wikipedia refuses to have a page on it because its not sufficiently "relevant" (their term)

JonathanStrange -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/9/2010 11:08:01 PM)

The Three Moves Ahead podcast was fairly interesting - but mostly, I think, useful as an introduction to Distant Worlds. There was discussion of the game's contribution to the genre; especially its ambitious automation. Yet ultimately it's fairly lightweight, I don't see it as a being particularly positive or negative. There was some enthusiasm for Distant Worlds, but the podcast wasn't a examination of DWs strengths and weakness. How could it be when one of the three apparently had never played it, another had apparently just skimmed DW, and only the last (Tom Chick) had much experience with the game. And he doesn't much care for it if his QT3 and Fidgit comments are an indication.

HsojVvad -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/10/2010 12:07:01 AM)

I guess it was my attention span, I couldn't listen to the pod cast. I tried, but ended up tuning them out. I didn't even know what they were talking about. Went too long about nothing. I guess you have to be use to them. They were talking about something else for like 2 or 3 minutes before DW was even mentioned.

JonathanStrange -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/10/2010 12:48:04 AM)

Heh. I know what you mean (you have to get used to them). But it was all fairly basic, very basic stuff. (Podcasts usually convey very little info despite going on forever, usually you could summarize it all in a paragraph.)

taltamir -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/10/2010 1:43:32 AM)

what podcast? i didn't see any links to podcasts here

It is easy to miss if you don't know what you were looking for. Here I will just post the link for you.

echn111 -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/11/2010 12:20:12 AM)

Never heard of "matrix games" and not overly impressed so far. First impressions: How come they haven't bothered to advertise this game anywhere? Why isn't the buy button more obvious? And why force you to fill out all your credit card details even though you want to pay by paypal? Why force customers to create a another login to post on forums? But since I'm not too familar with it, perhaps I wouldn't rush to judgement and consider this a review.

But I do know of "Out of Eight" as a review site and have just bought this game solely based on the reputation of of their reviewer and their site over the last few years. Although I don't always agree with a lot of what they say, their overall track record is good enough that if they say 8/8, I'll give it a try. And it's probably the only review site I would do that with.

Sure it's less commercial and focused on slower paced "non-instant gratification" games than many of the more commercial ones (e.g. gamespot, ign etc.). The big review sites "sometimes" put decent reviewers for the big games from the big publishers, but this type of low-publicity game would normally go to the traditional reviewer for that type of commercial site - you know the type: in their twenties, grew up on consoles and PC FPS's, favour instant gratification and their reviews reflect this, low social skills and not very confident nor experienced outside their comfort zone so if they run into something here that isn't given a lot of publicity it gets marked down etc.)

Anyway, maybe the game sucks, but given the "Out of Eight" reviewer's track record I doubt it.

I would disagree with you Jaguar by saying you have no clue what you're talking about. Feel free to listen to the advice of the young reviewers on the big sites and consider them to be the real "professionals" if you wish, but you're simply deluding yourself.

taltamir -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/11/2010 1:23:13 AM)

remember when gamespot fired that guy for giving a bad score to a ****ty game that was advertised heavily on their site?
http://kotaku.com/328244/gamespot-editor-fired-over-kane--lynch-review

as for why you need to create a separate login for the forums... show me where you use your forum login for buying games? it is completely standard to keep the two separate.

as for why it isn't advertised... advertising costs a lot of money.

Anthropoid -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/11/2010 3:06:50 AM)

What kinda games do you like echn111? If you like complex strategy games that are hard to master (and often hard to LEARN!), you'll probably become a Matrix fan. If not, you probably won't like their stuff.

They don't need to advertise. They don't have fat cat corporate backers breathing down there necks [:D] (You guys don't have fat cat corporate backers breathing down your necks yet do you? You didn't 'sell out' to the man yet did you?")

Matrix has more ancestral linkage to hex-map military board games than to arcade games; its not a huge market so advertising probably wouldn't necessarily serve anyway.

Webbco -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/11/2010 3:04:29 PM)

I have no interest whatsoever in hex-map board games, but DW is totally different.

I would even argue that DW isn't THAT difficult to learn...it's just you can't rush into it as quickly as you can with mainstream RTS games.

The automation feature, despite certain issues that are being worked on, opens DW up to a much wider audience than that of many of the other matrix games (in my opinion).

SeanD -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (4/12/2010 4:56:50 PM)

Added the Eurogamer score!

Congrats!

Gertjan -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (12/4/2010 9:12:35 AM)

Another review on Gamesquad:

unclean -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (1/10/2011 10:02:30 AM)

Out of curiosity, why doesn't Distant Worlds have more reviews? Seems like it's a bit under received, even in the world of niche strategy games.

Data -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (1/10/2011 10:25:42 AM)

to be honest i like that this game started and maybe still is the underdog...the big boys will never see it coming
altough from what i've read here and there we're gaining momentum fast

SeanD -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (2/14/2011 6:16:34 PM)

Added the PC4WAR take on ROTS.

Data -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (2/14/2011 6:28:42 PM)

aha, another small step for humanity but a biig one for us [:)]

SeanD -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (11/9/2011 8:22:37 PM)

Added a very positive GameSquad review of ROTS. Right before the Legends release no less!

http://www.gamesquad.com/review/reviewed-distant-worlds-return-shakturi

8.5

Distant Worlds: Return of the Shakturi is a worthwhile expansion to a solid 4X strategy game. Really, there is no reason why a dedicated DW fan should pass it up.

Data -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (11/10/2011 7:07:13 AM)

Good timing [:)]

SeanD -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (12/5/2011 2:45:54 PM)

Grotius -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (12/5/2011 3:08:43 PM)

Very nice review! He pointed out a few things I'd overlooked. Good press for a deserving game.

SeanD -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (12/12/2011 4:55:52 PM)

Added a shining Space Sector review of Legends. And I quote:

What are you waiting for? Buy it now!

Grotius -> RE: Distant Worlds Reviews (12/12/2011 9:25:49 PM)

Sean, you might as well quote the preceding sentences too. It doesn't get much better than this.

quote:

If Master of Orion 2 was the 4X space strategy gaming reference of the nineties, then Distant Worlds Legends is the 4X space strategy gaming reference of the early XXI century. What are you waiting for? Buy it now!

Congrats to CodeForce and Matrix on another well-deserved rave review.
