Haven't all of these game developers figured out that a large majority of players are carrier nuts? Gratuitous space battles he had to add em, SOTS2 is going to have them, SOASE well thank god for SOASE haveing cap carrier and light carriers!. Anyways please add carriers fighters/bombers landing and taking off carriers would be so incredibly sweet in this game.

HsojVvad -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 7:24:14 AM)

I think this would be a great idea for an expansion. Have you put this idea in the wish list thread?

jam3 -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 7:29:07 AM)

Not yet I'll see if this thread stirs up interest.

WE need it in both threads then. Erik asked us to put ideas in that thread as one, to keep everything together. That thread you mention it, in this thread we debate and discuss it.

Even if it's mentioned already, you mention it as well so they can see different people asking for the same thing. It might not come in a patch, but an update if they do what StarDock does, or in an expansion pack.

jam3 -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 7:35:29 AM)

Ok i put it in there.

HsojVvad -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 7:42:53 AM)

See I made my own fighters. Basicaly it's just an escort with one engine one thruster, one laser (always forget what it is called),basically one of each for the minimum. They are small and fragil like a fighter should be. For other fighters, i would have like a Bwing fighter with armour and shields, or an xwing with maybe 2 engines and 3 thrusters and shields but no armour, or Awing, being fast and manuverable.

Yes these are not real fighters per say, but at least I made them. And they all have hyperdrives just like in Star Wars. But I would love to have a ship that can transport other ships. Say have ships with no hyper drive and they connect to a ship so they can warp to other systems. Or have these carriers carry the ship so they don't use fuel, and then can refuel them after the battle, so you don't have to be so close to a star.

But I would love to have fighters, then we would need anti fighter weapons to go against them because they should be hard to target with weaponry that we use agaisnt other ships and bases.

*edit* Of course we should be able to make our own fighters too, as heavily armoured but slower, or faster and less armour.

Gertjan -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 8:08:35 AM)

Lol I find it always so amusing that people really dig carriers. I prefer battleships.

I love both and the really great thing about space games is you can develop battle mechanics to accomodate both without sacrificing realism/immersion.

I prefer battleships too... THAT CARRY FRIGATES AND CRUISERS! But not carriers as such. Fighters + space = seems such a waste :)

The Starship Yamato or Argo. Battleship and fighters all together. I don't know about you, but I love fighters because of Star Wars and Star Blazers. I want my fighters. [:D]

*edit* Ah great now, you see what you did? I can't get the song out of my head now.

"We're off into outer space. We are leaving mother earth. To save the human race. OUR STAR BLAZERS"

Gertjan -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 9:01:13 AM)

I like the fighters in Sins though, but I also could live without. Just imagine those little fighters as being invisible/too tiny. Or bring some escorts in your fleet and imagine those being the fighters.

Just doesn't work for fighter/carrier lovers. We need to here the hum and buzz of little bee's racing around gigantic ships dogfighting and swooping in for strafing runs. In space think of the scene in Return of the Jedi where they jump in and the fighters all race in and the center of the action comes alive as hundreds of various fighters swoosh all around you. Anything less is criminal :)

Carrier lovers would love to organize CAP's, squadron rotations, pilots in genreral, etc, etc. Wait til some of the WITP guys get into this thread :)

Starfry -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 9:20:54 AM)

How would carriers actually work with the current combat style?  Warships can jump out easily when threatened then jump back in to kill the vulnerable carriers when the fighters are docking as the fighters would not carry much fuel.

Nuts being the operative word.

Ranbir -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 1:23:45 PM)

I think it is too much hassle and not having enough detail given the way this game works, I dunno, would seem weird. The combat here feels more Trekkie than Warsie, in my view.

BigWolfChris -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 3:16:08 PM)

Unless a bloody good way to handle them was thought up I'd imagine they would be more of a headache than anything

Wade1000 -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 3:44:40 PM)

Yes, I agree to have carriers and fighters represented in some form.

-Maybe fighter bays as another ship component and the fighters that come with(or are added to) it as another generalized/abstarcted weapon system. That would be great.

-Maybe each fighter bay could launch a group of fighters(5 maybe) that seeks to target like the missile weapon. The graphic, instead of hitting and exploding, would stay/"stick" to the target and fly around close to it shooting it and slowly damaging it.
THUS, a fighter bay "shot" would act as a "damage over time"(DOT) effect.

-These "fighter bays" might also be added to stations and planets.

-There would need to be a point defense component for ships and bases.

-There would need to be a way to have or portray fighters intercepting each other.
Perhaps, if each fighter bay "shot"(group of fighters) pass close by each other then they would stay/"stick" to each other and slowly damage over time(DOT) each other.
These "shot" interceptions, perhaps, could be unlimited in their battles and thus a concentrated mass of fighters could be slowly destroying each other.

-Replenishing the fighter numbers at bases would be good. Also, though, maybe a very advanced component to place on very large ships could produce fighters to replenish them away from bases.

VarekRaith -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 3:51:53 PM)

Here's the thing. Most 4x and RTS space games get fighters/carriers wrong. They're either completely useless or overpowered swarms of DOOM. If they are to be added, I'd like to see proposals on how to implement them opened up to us before hand.

ASHBERY76 -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 5:24:35 PM)

I do not see how carriers in DW would be anything but tiny suicide darts,like most 4x games.

What if said carriers had that device that prevents warping? Again who says carries have to be weak? Remeber an escort can be bigger than a cruiser if you want. You make your carrier as strong as you want. You just end up paying the price in maintence costs. that is why you have carriers with escorts, destroyers and cruisers around them as well. I believe that is what MOO III tried to do in it's Combat, have a diversity of units.

Also some of us love Star Blazers and would love to make our own Argo or Yamato, a battleship with fighters on board. It just dosn't have to be your classic aircratf carrier that we have know. With our imagination, our carrier can be what ever we want.

What about if we make it like a craft world or sorts. A living city like the Macross SDF-1? Our imagintion is limitless.

Ranbir -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 8:03:53 PM)

We can use our imagination that our capital ships do have fighters to enhance their survivability. Already imagining the crew so going to pilots is no big leap for me!

Interesting. Yeah, you could imagine that your torpedo shots also include a group of fighters homing to the target.

Yeah I can imagine that part, But that is a big leap for me. I ment our imagination on what we can design. Sorry if I was going to imagine that this game has fighters, I might as well not even got the game and I can imagine that I am playing this game while playing HoI or EU or back to an old MOO game.

As I said, I am using my imgaination by making fighters now. But I want to make fighters that don't have FTL and Carriers to be able to ferry them across to where ever I want. [:)]

Ranbir -> RE: Carriers (4/6/2010 10:00:24 PM)

Just wondering maybe something can be done with those aura-effect weapons that you can put on cap ships. Like suppression or something to represent fighters and bombers harassing the enemy.

jam3 -> RE: Carriers (4/7/2010 3:00:00 AM)

I think within the context of the game as it exists we should start with adding hangar components as this would allow you to design your own carrier, i.e. make that yamato or make a pure carrier through the designer. As to how the fighters/bomber work once deployed would be the next more involved discussion.

Malevolence -> RE: Carriers (4/7/2010 4:31:07 AM)

Well in terms of gameplay carriers and fighter/bombers are a great idea... so long as components are added for close-in weapon systems (anti-fighter/bomber).

That said, if you think DW stutters/lags now, wait until all those little fighter objects are added to the mix. I find it amusing that AI empire vs. AI empire battles don't appear to be aggregated--maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like those fights are going on in real-time as well. That is a lot of calculating.
