Will automated ships retrofit themselves?

The only way I know of, is left clicking on the ship, and then right click on it and choose refit. Depending on how big the difference is between the refit, it will take longer or shorter depending on the difference. For example it only take less than 30 seconds, when I order a ship to refit at the begining of the game, when I add solar panels to it. I am assuming it would to take more time if I added more structures to it.
