Would someone PULEASE tell me how to replicate the little swiggle that is at the end of many file names and subdirectories in MS DOS mode in the root directory of "C". I am getting ready to throw this entire computer out the window, but I don't want to hurt anyone below. Thanks :confused: :mad: ;)

~ that is what came immediately to my mind when I read "swiggle." Don't forget to use the "shift" key. So, I think we should say it is to the left of the "!". At least it is in every keyboard I remember.

Hell I don't remember where they are. I use the Biblical typing System.....[B]"Seek and Ye Shall Find"[/B] . When I originally typed or mistyped the first message I used (!), should of quit when I was ahead.:D :rolleyes: :cool:

I believe the proper name is tilde.

Why in all the 1020 pages of my book: " Mastering MS DOS 6.2, Second Edition" is there no reference to a "tilde" anywhere that I can find? Why would DOS be using it anyway? I took two years of Spanish in college, but I've only seen it above a letter "N". Would DOS be using it as an abreviation or something? MS DOS Tilde "Grasshopper". :)

Because it was never was used in a capacity the normal user would encounter, it was reserved for use in program coding and foreign names where it is over ceratin letters, it finally gets used in DOS 7.0 the basic code of Win 95 when a Win 95 filename is created gets viewed in a DOS enviorment that is longer than 8 characters. Until Win 95 came around no operating system ever had to worry about filenames longer than 8 characters. Aren't you glad you asked????

Undashtunda! No more than eight characters in an MS DOS string. So when '95 came out, there had to be some sort of ability to abreviate the famous or infamous backwards compatibilty parameter. At least MS finally came out with '98 with strings up to 256 characters. Right?

I belive you are correct a 256 character limitation for 98 and I think all other newer O/S's That why you'll see such things in a DOS enviroment as prog~1 for something like program files.

I use ~ quite a bit in real life. I forget where I got this from, but I use it as shorthand for "about." As in: "I've been playing Steel Panthers for ~8 years." A very useful character, IMHO.

I found them to be pretty good games even though the graphics are considered a little dated. I saw a CD for both games at a "STAPLES" store for only ten dollars. I saw a really interesting documentary on "The History Channel" about the life of Jefferson Davis AFTER the War. up until his death in the 1880's I believe. It was a facinating chronicle.
