Now we're going to make some windows on our spaceship for our astronaughts so they can see where they're going. Select the edges shown below by clicking on them with your mouse cursor.

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 5:40:03 AM)

Right click and choose "Cut" from the menu, then "3" from the following menu. This will cut our line into 3 segments so that we can make some relatively small windows up front.

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 5:42:36 AM)

Now switch to "Vertex Selection Mode" as shown below.

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 5:45:10 AM)

Make sure each of the newly created dots ("Vertexes") on our line segment is selected, right click and choose "Connect" from the menu. This will create some new faces which we will use for our windows.

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 5:49:16 AM)

Now switch back to "Face Selection Mode". Notice our two new small faces on the front of the ship. Deselect everything again and then click on each of the two small faces to select only them. Now right click to bring up the context menu and then right click again on "Material". It's very important to RIGHT click on the material selection. If you LEFT click it will bring up a list of existing materials you can use. By RIGHT clicking you are creating a NEW material.

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 5:53:21 AM)

Let's name our new material "Windows" because this is going to be the material that shows for our windows.

[image]local://upfiles/17421/3EB91A6BED8444A792762722AF23FD0E.jpg[/image]

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 5:57:40 AM)

Click "OK" and we come to the "Material Properties" window. Click in the white box at the end of the slider bar next to "Diffuse" to bring up the color options for this material property.

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 6:00:30 AM)

We want our windows to glow yellow from the lights inside the ship. So click somewhere on the yellow bar to create a yellow material color for our two faces.

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 6:03:17 AM)

Next move the "shininess" bar almost all the way to the left so that our windows will glow very yellow/white.

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 6:10:11 AM)

We want our spaceship to be fashionable so the last touch we'll add to our model is a little color to the wings. Deselect everything once again and then select the top side of the wings. You can select the bottom too if you want but the bottoms aren't going to show up in our later renders so there's really no need to add color to the bottom unless you plan on using your model in a 3D game someday.

With the wings selected choose "Inset" one last time to create a little color swath on the wing. Create the inset and then right click to choose the "Material" one last time. This time let's choose a green color for our wing highlights using the same color selection process as before.

GaryChildress -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 6:16:37 AM)

Voila!! Our space ship is complete and ready to fly off on intergalactic adventures.

This completes the model making tutorial. Believe me, we've only touched the tip of the iceberg on what Wings3D can do. I hope you have fun creating your own models in the future. Experiment with the program and have fun.

The next tutorial will be on exporting and importing models into a rendering program to create 2D images for the game. I'm pretty much spent for tonight. I'll probably need to put off the second tutorial until this weekend when I hopefully have some time for it.

In the meantime you can practice your ship making skills, come up with some interesting designs of your own and by the time you have some of your own designs I'll have the second tutorial up. [:)]

i have never done anything like this before and i think with your help I may be able to do something

Well done! Looks like you're getting the gist of it rather quickly! From here you can experiment a little and come up with your own designs. Basically all it takes is practice. Just dabble around with new things. See how everything works. If you have questions I'll try to answer them as best I can. [:)]

Not bad. Looks like you're getting it. Just takes some practice.

Mr Gary Childress,

YOU my man, are a STAR!!!!!!![sm=bow.gif]
Thanks for putting this tutorial together. BRILLIANT!!!!

murteas -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/7/2010 9:01:12 PM)

thank you so much for doing this.   I'll make sure to share what I design.

Thanks Gary -- Great tutorial. [&o] Looks like you've had some practice writing instructional materials. I've been playing around with Wings 3D...lots of fun. I'm hoping the rendering app used in your next tutorial is as easy to use as Wings 3D. I've poked around the net looking for a free app and found Blender. The learning curve looks pretty steep, but I've only just started poking around in it. Anyone know of any others?

Holy smokes, there's a lot of effort gone into this!

I've never even considered doing any 3D design but after seeing this it makes me want to download this Wings3D program and give it a go.

Hey Eric!

This fantastic tutorial needs to be stickied to the top of this forum!!!![&o]

I patiently await the next step =)

GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL~! [&o]
I love these tutorials and they always ignite my inner game designer, then my wife goes ."Babe I need.."

Shark7 -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/8/2010 7:21:56 AM)

While I certainly can match the Emperor's finest, I do think I'm off to a fairly good start...at least it looks like something that could fly through space...of course, you might see a resemblance to another fairly famous spaceship...just a small one for sure.

And a little further on...granted it still looks very amatuer, but its better than anything else I've ever done. [:)]

Very cool, looks like a corellian corvette from Star Wars mixed with 2001 Space Odyssey

lordxorn -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/8/2010 1:42:35 PM)

What renderer are you using?

Shark7 -> RE: Tutorial: Building a 3D Spaceship Model with Wings3D (4/8/2010 2:44:15 PM)

That screen shot is just a pic of it with smoothing on from inside wings. I'll move it over into a better render engine with better texturing once I get a UV map done for it.
