D.W.O.H -> Need help with refueling issues (4/7/2010 6:58:39 AM)

Hi all,

I have fuel issues with alot of my ships & what exactly do I need to do to travel long distances in the game?, Do i just park resupply ships throughout the quadrant?

Also is their a way to design a ship that fuels itself?

what about putting a resupply ship in a fleet?, will it refuel the ships within the fleet? & what about when it needs to refuel?

Thanks, as any help would be most generous.

Resupply ships are the way to go when you want to extend the reach of your war ships. I don't know (yet) what 1.0.3 changes with these behemoths, but I hope their handling has become more straight-forward. I also suggest using custom ship designs that have more/larger fuel tanks for your warships.

As it stands, battles in particular are very draining to the fuel supplies of your fleet. It is a good idea to go fully fueled into battle and refuel soon afterwards, if possible.

As to self-fueling ships: *maybe* you could put gas extractors on normal ship types and would then be able to deploy them as you'd do with a resupply ship? Has anyone tried that? I'd expect this ability to be tied to the role of the ship and haven't experimented with this.

You could outfit ships with energy collectors. They will then fill their energy reserves from the star they're around, so long as they are really idle and standing still. Automated warships should rarely be idle, though, so energy collectors look like a definite waste on these. In fleets it is a different matter, the way these are handled now. Personally, I don't like the idea of energy collectors on ships. They take up space I'd rather devote to propulsion, std. energy generators or weaponry.

I have never tried it, but putting a resupply ship into a fleet doesn't look like a good idea. Fleets are there so you can give commands from a limited set to a group of ships. In almost no case would you want to give the same commands to a fleet and their resupply ship (except, maybe, for 'go to this system').

Re: Energy Collectors...
These will only replenish energy reserves, not fuel

One method is too build a Gas Mining Station around the nearest Gas Giant/Cloud to the battle, but outside enemy space, but make sure you arm/defend it
Of course, you can use a refuel vessel for mobility (quicker if the battle locations are continuously moving), but again, these must be deployed in the nearest Gas Giant/Cloud to the battle

Increased Fuel Storage is a good choice as well, I would highly recommend putting a couple extras on

What's the difference between energy and fuel (usage)? Do you mean that energy collectors are not useful?

Energy powers everything
Reactors are used to give energy, but at the cost of using up fuel

With an energy collector, it will give you energy (but in smaller amounts) when idle in a star system

Fuel is required, energy collectors will prolong fuel reserves with less active vessels

Also, if you have enough collectors on a starbase within a star system, it will hardly need refueling
BUT, do note, the number an energy collector shows in the stats is "Potential Energy", it will be closer to this number the closer to a systems star it is, and lower the further it is
The moment it is outside a system with a star, it will no longer gain anything
In a ship that is usually quite active, don't bother having them, use the space on a fuel tank instead

Personally, I think they should collect energy in a system whether they are idle or not, providing they aren't in hyperspace, the collectors are exposed to the solar winds and radiation regardless, just in smaller amounts the further out they are
Of course, for game balance, it should maybe only be able to reach potential when idle, but even lesser amounts while moving

sbach2o -> RE: Need help with refueling issues (4/7/2010 3:48:05 PM)

My understanding is that your energy reserves should be filled by Energy Collectors first, and if these cannot keep up with the drain, the reactors will kick in. So long as the collectors alone can keep the energy store maxed, there should be no need to burn fuel.

Of course, I am not certain it is working this way. It makes sense in gameplay terms, maybe less so from a realism standpoint. To switch a reactor on or off at a moment's notice should be a very advanced technical challange, if not as advanced as faster than light travel.

Just to clarify: The original question was about general tips on fuel issues. The way I think the system is designed, Energy Collectors may help even for warships when they are idling a lot. Ships in fleets do idle a lot, so long as I am not at war. I still think Energy Collectors are not a very good solution as explained above. But mentioning them should still be justified.

I agree!

Any word on this Dev? Other player experiments? If I put extractors on automated ships like scout ships will they use them?
