Dan K -> Another book. (4/7/2010 1:14:02 PM)

Greetings,
Probably many of you have read this one already, but I'm just getting to it.
Michael Korda's "With Wings Like Eagles" {A History Of The Battle Of Britain} 2009 ISBN: 978-0-06-112535-5
I'm enjoying it very well.

On the subject of books, A friend gave me "The Luftwaffe War Diaries" by Cajus Bekker. I'm particularly enjoying the accounts of the German aircrews experiences at the opening moments of each of the major campaigns.

Kind of unsettling in a way though when Bekker attempts to "justify" the bombings of Warsaw and Rotterdam... sort of like "we warned you we would pound the bejeezus out of you but you chose to stay and defended your homeland so it's not our fault". Classic case of blaming the victim.[:(]

Hard Sarge -> RE: Another book. (4/7/2010 3:51:14 PM)

not to disagree, or back up that kind of thinking, but, at the time, there was a common idea, of the Open City, as the defender, if you claimed the city to be open, you wouldn't defend/man it, and the enemy wouldn't attack/bomb it

(Paris was one that comes to mind)

so, I think that may be where he is coming from, with that idea

Was reading your post Sarge and had a thought that made me laugh.

Strange how times have changed. I agree with your point about "Open City" but on a twist... in all the world travel my career has taken me My perception of an "Open City" is when I am rolling up to a vendors shop and I see by the door... "Amreican Holy Symbols... Visa, Mastercard & American Express" LOL... but your point is well taken Sarge.

Later,
KayBay [8D]
