Henri -> easy scenario for newbies (4/7/2010 7:17:39 PM)

The Kharkov full scenario as well as the 3 scenarios included with the 1.3 patch are a bit much for a beginner. A nice small scenario to start with is the user-made Soltsky scenario, which is in effect a meeting engagement on a small map with relatively small numbers of units.Actually this might be a good scenario for a hands-on tutorial. Essentially there is one major highway oriented N-S, a major E-W rail line in the middle, another N-S highway along the W edge of the map which is initially only useful to the Soviets, since it only connects to the main highway by means of the rail line in the center; However if the Germans ever get control of the rail line, they could use the edge highway to move up the map, which doesn't seem too likely although I have so far only played a few moves. There are a lot of small trails and many rivers with bridges all over, but I doubt that these can be of much use to the Germans who are on the offensive here, since their objective is to move up the main highway on the way to Leningrad (off-map). Initially the Germans have almost only recon units on the map, and the same for the Soviets - both armies have their main forces coming in as reinforcements, the Germans from the SE corner and the Soviets from the NW corner and the top of the map. When they collide fighting will take place mostly between recon units and a few artillery units, but both units have airplane strikes and most units have only one step, so I presume that the best Soviet strategy is to sacrifice a few units to slow down the Germans, and for the Germans to risk losing a few weak units to allow fast movement as far as possible up the highway before the Soviet main force arrives. Both sides must cover a wide area to avoid enemy units slipping behind their lines, but this means leaving big holes in the line which can be dangerous to HQ and artillery units: one hit from an air strike and a weak unit can be gone. having not played very far yet I can't say much more about strategy, but it is clear that once the reinforcements from both sides have joined the fray, there will be blood! I would guess that the Soviets will attempt to hold and delay by blowing bridges and hunkering down while the Germans will attempt to break through, but this depends on who has the initiative. Henri
