You can see the P-47 ancestry in the airframe.

Two major US fighters evolved from a 1930s US Army specification.  The spec was so tight the two winning entries looked fairly similar: the P-35 and P-36.  The P-36 evolved into the P-40 and the P-35 evolved first into the P-43 and finally the P-47.
