I have a planet I want to colonize a planet with minors on it, and when ever I send colony ships there they fail to colonize the planet. So is there another way of taking the planet? I guess I can send troops there but happens if I do that? Will that be declaring war? Will I get a big happiness hit? Will that planet revolt after I send troops to it? Is there a diplomatic way of making them like me more?

I just don't like the idea of taking it by force if there is another way of doing it, but I don't see it. I am asking just in case there is a way to make colonly ships be succesfull at colonizing a planet that dosn't want to.

So are my only choices are keep sending colony ships and hoping for the best or send troops and take it by force?

You can send troops. Independent colonies are easy pickings and offer little resistance, if at all.

Doing this incurs a reputation hit. Such a reputation hit can lead indirectly to war with rival empires because it damages relations with them. It doesn't seem to have a negative impact on relations with other independents of the same race (what relations there are...).

Note that you then best take other independents of this race with colony ships populated with their brethren. These seem to always have a good chance of pulling the colonies over, even if the colony view says otherwise.

So if I havn't met any major races yet, and send in the troops, would I still take a reputation hit when I finally meet one?

Also what factors in for the race to like you? Is it random? In one game I had the Quanom (sorry for the spelling, the ones with that start with Q and live on Ocean worlds) and I had no problem colonizing them, but in my current game, same race, where it says if the planet is colonizable it's in red. (forgot what it said) bascially saying it will be a failure if I try.

Yes you can invade it, just remember your reputation will take a hit for a while, but if you make no other aggressive moves, it will come back to satisfactory over time. Sometimes invasion is the only way to get a race to 'join' your empire...

It is a no brainer choice.I would add 10 troops for defending Independent colonies personally.

I'm pretty fanatic about playing the diplomatic game and keeping relations up, but even I invade independents. The hit to rep is more than manageable.

After several colony ship attempts on the more resistent independents one will usually succeed.

I have played this game for only one day, so I have limited experience. I ran into 2 minors, sent colony ship to each. They got wiped. Then came the transport with 4 troop units. Both those planets are now contibution nicely to my bottom line...

Why should an independent colony that doesn't even have the resources to build a single colony ship yet have a huge army?

Well, without getting into real world examples, maybe in some expansion someday we ask for ground units of different strength... like militia for independent colonies vs. space marines for empires.

I think your reputation is a global property of your empire, independent of who you are in contact with. So it affects your relations with all (some AI empires seem to weigh your reputation differently.

Just speculation: I think independents like/dislike you according to the general stance of your two races against each other. When you look at the details of the stance of an AI empire regarding yourself, you'll sometimes find "we instinctively dislike you". That should be a hint. Maybe all the races have a prefered government type and dislikes of others. So you type of government may also factor into the equation. And some may just be more xenophobic than others.

The probability of a successful colonization for different races appears to be related to their Friendliness values against each other. Colonizing a friendly race with another friendly race tends to work well. Colonizing a race with itself is similarly effective. When you are unfriendly, and they are unfriendly, the two values rarely succeed. However, it only takes one army to invade a even a very large independent planet, so a single destroyer can take it. This will give you a place you can build colony ships from, so you can then colonize other planets of that race, without incurring further rep hits. If you take over a friendly species, they are also much better ambassadors. For instance, Humans and Securans are particularly effective colonial ambassadors, and a colony ship with them is very likely to flip a planet that scores as "Very Unlikely", because you are, say, the Dhayut.

However, invading them instead is free, and you don't have to use up a colony ship or take any time other than a fly-by shooting.

this is the method i use most of the time . it's pretty costly , credits and time-wise .

but if u have lots of credits to spare , u can have your nearest colony world spam colony ships to that one independent colony .

plus it doesnt reduce your rep with the independents , other empires , or your own citizens as far as i kno .
