Does the AI use bombardment or only troop invasions? I have never seen it happening, but then again usually I'm the one who's attacking.

Fishman -> RE: AI use of bombardment (4/13/2010 8:25:22 AM)

I have never seen the AI use bombardment, but since bombardment is apparently such a heinous atrocity entire races independently of empire will hate you for, and the design of the game tends to make all empires multiracial, the AI is probably unable to effectively cope with the fallout from bombarding, anyway.

I'm not totally sure, but I think bombardment weapons were added in the 11th hour. I don't think the AI behaviors were added. This goes along with some quirky behavior regarding torps and bombs being in the same tech stack. When you make a bombardment tech discovery, beware that automation will replace your torps with bombardment weapons (which do no damage to other ships) during upgrades.

Fishman -> RE: AI use of bombardment (4/13/2010 6:53:49 PM)

I think that was eliminated in the update. Although the game DOES still confuse categories of torpedoes, classifying the shorter ranged "heavy" torpedo above the "sniper" version, even though I regard it as a categorically inferior weapon because range and speed are everything. If you are fighting an opponent that is faster and has longer range than you, you are dead. Period.

As of 1.0.3, I still get nuclear devastators on my space ports.

Is this with a game that was started in 1.0.3? If so, thanks for the report, we'll make sure this gets fixed.

An AI civilization powerful or just plain mean enough to use bombardment would be cool: you'd think twice about getting on their bad side.

Ug.

Wish list:population centers beyond planetary(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Culture):Ships,Ring Orbitals,Sphere Orbitals,Ringworlds,Sphereworlds;ability to create & destroy planets,population centers,stars;AI competently using all advances & features.

Bombardment in the game is pretty much the act of a mean-spirited and impotent actor. If you were powerful, it would be easier to invade a planet than to bombard it, so you don't have to recolonize it and then rebuild your defenses there SLOWLY. And frankly, there are few planets that you cannot take with a super-battleship carrying 20+ legions on it. The AI simply does not defend planets that heavily. The AI is also far better at invading than bombarding, as he swarms it with suicide dropships. I have had to install wave blasters on starbases to defend against this.

In the absence of biological and chemical weapons, this is the only way to ensure the racial purity of your empire.

Even if such an act were considered desirable for some reason (objectively, it isn't), it does not work, because passenger craft, either yours or theirs, will transport migrants to other worlds anyway. It is possible to gain alien minority populations even if you never annex any alien populations this way.

Heh. That element in this game shows the flaws of real life segregation and genocide. Any very intelligent life form has helpful potential. Even any lesser intelligent life form has helpful potential. In a grand strategic overview of life, integration of life and the sharing of varying ideas is most beneficial to success.

For the game, though, it is good to be able to have players or AI opponents play as a evil/low reputation empires.

An oversimplification of the real issues. In real life, different peoples may have different attributes and characteristics to the point where they are simply counterproductive to keep around, because they consume the space and resources that could be better used by more productive citizens. This can be seen in games like Armada or MOO2, where populational units have different attributes, some of which may be categorically inferior to simply cleansing the planet with fire and recolonizing with your own: For instance, if you have a race that gives +3 to productionness, and another one that gives +3 to researchness, a race of inferior attributes offers you nothing, particularly if there is a productivity penalty applied to being the Non.

In DW, none of this occurs because one peasant is as good as any other: All peasants pay taxes at the same rate, and as long as your empire consists of a diverse selection of peasantry, you will receive the racial bonuses globally, and therefore, it is to your benefit to acquire a diverse selection for maximum benefitness. While a clear "Master Race" exists in every category, those of other races do not become counterproductive as there is no opportunity cost imposed for possessing them: You have already received the bonus and what happens afterwards is of no consequence.

Malevolence -> RE: AI use of bombardment (4/14/2010 7:18:07 PM)

Please keep in mind, all the intelligent species I know, readily and frequently conduct irrational behavior. The question is really, "who benefits?"
