Wicky -> tiny bug: mining equipment on mobile ships (4/17/2010 6:33:28 PM)

For some reason, everytime I design a gas/mining ship (mobile), it looks as if the extraction rate gets cut in half. Could you please take a look at the attached screenshot, it says I have one gas mining equipment for 18 gas/sec and in the summary says 9/sec.

If I add the gas mining equip first, it says 18/sec. But after I finish adding all necessary components like reactor, armor, hyperdrive etc. at some point it will suddenly become half, 9/sec. I had some curious situation when I noticed that just after adding 1 additional hab station it became 9, then I removed the hab and it was 18 again. I added the habitation again and and it was lowered once more. The luxury is also effected. But never on mining stations, just on ships. It can't be the static energy usage, there is plenty of solar panels.

Yeah Wicky, I noticed this sometime back. I mentioned it but never had an official response about it. The unofficial consensus was basically that it was a small ship and the component was prorated down but that still doesn't tell me why I'm paying full price for the component and its full size but only does half the work.

Elliot?

Maybe the component is less effective because the mining ship is not as securely parked when drilling. Or at least, that'd be one valid explanation.

The best explanation I can think of is that its working as designed but that the component should be smaller and isn't. It only makes sense that a stationary mining station would be able to use bigger machinery rather than the small, mobile ship.

Or that something of comparable size on a mobile miner is less efficient.

And the only logical argument I can think of for that is that mobile miners aren't braced properly like permanently emplaced mining stations are.

and packing/unpacking... hardening to withstand the stresses of accelleration...

Basically I would expect a mobile mining ship to be much less efficient than a stationary one.
