Grit -> Subs in Manila (4/19/2010 5:31:15 PM)

I'm playing my first full campaign against the computer and it's Dec. 14th.

I have a bunch of subs based in Manila that are out on patrol attempting to wreak havoc with Japanese shipping.

Eventually Manila will be taken. Where should I move these guys for a permanent base? I know this is a really basic question but I hate to make a big mistake so early. If it's somewhere like Darwin do I need to do it in stages taking in consideration endurance?

Thanks

If fully fueled, all PI-based US subs can easily reach Darwin. However, you should consider home-porting them in the DEI for a while, as was done historically.

Thanks, I'll start them moving soon.

I will usually sacrifice one AS at Manilla to rearm subs. After Manilla falls or the AS is put out of action, I use Soreboea(sp?) until it falls and then split the subs between Perth and Colombo. Dutch to Colombo and USN to Perth.

Thanks.

Since this is my first game it's hard to judge how long Manila will last. Wondering if I should play it safe or wait till the end and then move them.

I'm sure there will be tougher issues before I get to 1945.

Edit: I didn't even think about rearming the subs.

freeboy -> RE: Subs in Manila (4/20/2010 7:17:17 PM)

why Perth instead of Darwin? I do a 42 split with anti merchies out of columbo, darwin and Midway.. into the areas clossest to these bases, and anti capital ship groups of 10-20 close to the action, so these are shadowing the jap action groups... hope that helps

I just moved a bunch of them down to Balikapnana (sp). The Manila harbor is getting bombed hard.

I'll keep your suggestions in mind when I make the final decision on where to put these guys.

Balikpapan, if not captured outright, will be invested (and maybe bombed) very soon. Darwin is safer.

Directly Soerabaja  for my taste , and when the tide arrives  perth as said . or placing an AS at one of the little  Oz West Coast bases , I would not use darwin until i am sure Japan is not going to land/mount an intense air campaign from timor on Darwin.

Colombo doesn´t fit my like as subs over there really are only defensive weapons,  due the high risk in crossing the malacca straits they are too far away from their targets.

Yes, Kuching and Miri have already been invaded. So after reading all the great advice I've decided to move them to Soerabaja (thanks vlcz) and when things get bad to Darwin.

I know it doesn't compare to playing against a human but the AI in this game really keeps you on your toes.

Nomad -> RE: Subs in Manila (4/21/2010 9:46:32 PM)

The other reason for using Perth instead of Darwin is the small repair shipyard present. It can really help.

Sardaukar -> RE: Subs in Manila (4/21/2010 10:03:38 PM)

Plus Darwin is really difficult to supply after Japanese take Timor.

Grit -> RE: Subs in Manila (4/22/2010 2:27:43 PM)

Thanks Nomad and Sardaukar.

I wanted Darwin so I would still have the option of sending the subs east or northwest. Perth just seems like a long way from action. But why put them in Darwin if I'm going to have to move them again anyway.

It looks like I'll have to settle on Perth. I've started moving some supply and fuel there.

Shark7 -> RE: Subs in Manila (4/22/2010 3:31:09 PM)

In a PBEM, I'm not sure it would be safe in the DEI much past February '42. KB can return from PH, refuel, reload and re-plane and be on its way to the DEI by early January easily, and be there by mid-January. If most players are like me, we're in hunt and kill in the ports mode, trying to cause the Allies as much losses as possible while KB is still Queen of the Seas.

USS Henrico -> RE: Subs in Manila (4/23/2010 3:26:57 AM)

Of course, if your PBEM opponent starts by attacking Manila instead of Pearl, Soerabaja can be hit by the KB before the war is ten days old, never mind January.
