Astorax -> Forums not remembering last state (4/20/2010 9:22:52 PM)

I have noticed this for a little while and its getting quite aggravating. When I come to a forum some thread titles will be bolded meaning they have new posts. I then click on the forum and read it, back out and go on. No problem.

But!

If I leave the forums and go do something else and come back, *some* of the time the same threads will be bolded but have no new posts beyond the last one I read. Some may say but maybe someone just edited a post. Perhaps, but over 20 threads worth? I was in the Distant Worlds forum after not checked it for a day and there were alot of new posts/threads. I read them all. Left the forums, came back and ALL of them were bolded again. No new posts, nothing.

What is the problem? What is a solution? This doesn't happen all the time but enough so its getting pretty annoying fast.

This is an old problem, and I'm not sure myself why it does this.

Look at your browser's cookie settings.  Make sure they are allowed for this site. You also may need to delete all current/old cookies as a bit of a "reset," if there's an operating system or browser induced file locking problem with the actual cookies. You also need javascript turned on to read the cookies for this site (this catches me often, as I turn javascript off by default... which is a fantastic way to stop one hell of a lot of spam, when cruising the web)

Greybriar -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/21/2010 1:46:38 PM)

I am having the same problem as you, Astorax. I don't believe it is on my end because I haven't had it happen at any of the other forums I visit.

You may find that when you come back your computer is reloading the page from the last time you were there via the memory. Try refresh or I find that if you totally go offline it may take care of the problem. Same reason if you go into some sites, leave but stay on line, when you go back you don't have to log in again, but if you go off line and then go back it is like the first time. Another problem I have had is I tell it to mark all as read, but sometimes when I go back they are again listed as not read.

Astorax -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/21/2010 9:33:17 PM)

Yogi, its nothing at all to do with my computer because, as Greybriar stated, it never happens on any other forums but Matrix which leads me to the not unreasonable conclusion that its a Matrix forum problem and not my computer settings.

Does Erik look at this section of the forums much? I wouldn't want him dragging Elliotg off fixing game problems but perhaps he could inform some lower level forum administrator to fix it?

Karri -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/21/2010 9:42:17 PM)

I have the same. Both in my home comp and at work, with IE and Firefox.

jackx -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/21/2010 10:23:01 PM)

The "mark as read" issue seems to be related to tabs, in my experience - make sure you do that in your most recently opened tab of the forums, or preferably when you've only got the forums open in a single tab.

I'd guess this is also at least partially responsible for the thread status update in general, I'd imagine it's kinda hard to track what your current status is if you're all over the place in half a dozen different places at once.

Astorax -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/21/2010 10:43:41 PM)

Jack, I usually only use one tab for everything. As per "mark as read", is that because its old forum software or somesuch? What I mean is for no other forums need I do this and it remembers everything perfectly. It sounds like perhaps just the forum software needs upgrading, yes?

jackx -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/21/2010 11:41:37 PM)

Easily possible. It was just my personal observation that if the status displays weren't updated correctly for me, it usually seemed to follow a lot of tabbed browsing, which could simply have been coincidence, or even just lazy observation on my part...

I don't quite remember having this problem on other forums either.  I suspect the glitch lays with ASPPlayground.

Astorax -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/22/2010 7:07:37 PM)

So, I'm guessing that this very issue has been raised before then? I'm just debating on whether I should send something directly to Erik or not. People are a finicky lot. If they come here to check out the forums for a game before purchasing (happens a lot) and find glitchy forum software, thats their first impression of Matrix/Code-force for good or ill. "The forums are glitchy, is the game the same?"

I'm just saying it gives a bad impression to people that perhaps had never before heard of Matrix games or Codeforce. Distant Worlds is the first Matrix/Codeforce game I've played (well, I've played an Ageod Civil War game before) and I love the game. I would have to say though that we're both lucky that I didn't notice this forum behavior before I bought it. I tend to judge a company on the whole package, not some individual part. Not saying I wouldn't have ended up purchasing DW had I noticed this first but it would have given me pause.

Its not a huge issue certainly, just annoying as, more than likely, you will be on these forums for quite some time after you get into the game. I see Erik and Elliot on these forums and have great admiration for their dedication already and wouldn't want something like this to drive any potential customers off before trying one of their many games.

Yogi the Great -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/23/2010 1:18:36 AM)

Seriously? [&:]

You would really not buy a game because of a glitch in a forum? [&:]

Interesting.. [8|]

Then again I have seen people do really strange things for really stupid reasons I suppose. [X(]

To each, respect for their beliefs. [&o]

Just couldn't resist having a little fun, If it is important to you, it certainly may be important to others. [sm=Cool-049.gif]

Astorax -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/23/2010 2:10:42 AM)

I'm not saying I wouldn't have bought DW. I'm saying that it would certainly give the impression to new people that "As long as it works, bugs aren't that important." Its the first impression a potential paying customer has of this company and if their initial impression is half-assed, shoddy software ...well, what would they think the games will be like?

I'm trying to help out Matrix/Codeforce. I really like DW and want them to be a success so they can keep updating my game! Heh. Selfish and altruistic at the same time.

Yogi, if you've never made a decision based on a first impression then you are probably unique in all of humanity, my friend. This website is Matrix/Codeforce's face to the community and, as such, it should reflect how they run their company.

junk2drive -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/23/2010 2:25:00 AM)

I don't make decisions on first impressions. I've met a few liars in my life that look good at first. I've also dated a few girls that gave good first impressions and later...

Microsoft's websites and forums look pretty good.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/23/2010 2:25:14 AM)

Thanks for the info, I have passed it along to our admin.

Astorax -> RE: Forums not remembering last state (4/23/2010 2:31:28 AM)

Thank you, Erik, most appreciated.
