PHague80 -> Fighter Sweeps: No Bf-110 allowed? (4/21/2010 3:59:32 PM)

How come I can't use Bf-110 for fighter sweeps? Am I doing somethine wrong? I select fighter sweep, pick lead unit and only Bf-109 units are shown?

Any fixes?

You are not doing anything wrong.  The program prevents you from using the 110's in sweeps.  As has been explained before, the rationale for this programming decision was because they were not used in this manner historically.

Which is odd, because this is exactly the kind of thing the 110 was used for around this time. [;)]

Otis, you can hash this one out with Hard Sarge - or maybe you already have. [;)]

I've hex-edited the game to allow for the 110's to be used in sweeps. They can be deadly to landing RAF fighters. But they also can suffer heavy losses in the process. While I do not personally agree with these types of forced programming decisions, I respect the fact the HS, Harley and the beta-testers made a decision based on what they felt was appropriate - not simply done without thinking.

German air force strategy and military doctrine divided fighters as light interceptors and heavy escort fighters at start of the WW2. It was not until the Battle of Britain when German Luftwaffe figured it out that this kind of strategy and air doctrine does not work.

It would not be historical to allow German Bf-110 to be used in any other role than what German developed it. German really believed that Bf-110 would be heavy fighter that shoots down all enemies from very long distance and Bf-109 would light small range fighter to be only used to protect local targets.

The Bf 110's lack of agility in the air was its primary weakness. This flaw was exposed during the Battle of Britain, when some Bf 110 equipped units were withdrawn from the battle after very heavy losses and redeployed as night fighters, a role to which the aircraft was well suited.

Hi Nick,

looks like I missed a thread somewhere. Not looking for a row. Just thought it an strange reason to give for not allowing them to sweep.

You are 100 % on the next bit.

regards Otis
