NaKATPase -> The Victors in 7.1 (7/21/2002 12:42:08 AM)

Does anyone know if this campaign is optimized for the 7.1 OBs?

I had not played it before, and have just been playing around with the first mission... it seems really difficult... the soviet gunners seem really accurate...

Also, I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on force composition...
I've tried the mission twice thusfar... once using a larger number of M4a3 w/ 75mm, the second time with a smaller number of the 76mm sherman... would anyone suggest going with the M26 despite its higher cost? My thinking in choosing shermans was that I could upgrade later in the campaign, but are there even that many repair points?

Thanks to anyone with info :)

The campaign editor can tell you how much repair points are available. As for beating the soviets, all i got from it was a draw (though one that must have been very close to a marginal victory) I did not buy many shermans, i bought infantry, some AA, 76 mm AT guns with transpornt and for amour a few pershings and some TD. The bigger the gun (and the higher the accuracy numbers) the better.

Young man, I have one word for you: Rockets! (With apologies to everyone involved with the produciton of the movie "The Graduate".)

Buy as many onboard rockets as you can and use them as often as you can - otherwise the Soviet AI will not respect you in the morning.

The enemy shoots a lot better in 7.1 than before and the AI is quite a bit more aggressive too.

Make sure whatever leg units you have are equipped with the M9 bazooka - I believe the OOB finally redresses the puzzling state of "armed" infantry and recon units carrying the M9 zook, but not the airborne, which I never understood. I always edited the OOB's and if necessary the individual units.

Make sure you have an FO and his arty rating is no less than 80 - edit if necessary, you will need a very good FO. Put him anywhere - forget LOS for arty - it doesn't mean beans in the game. Play with unlimited ammo - surely the US would by this stage of the conflict have pretty much solved their supply problems, otherwise how could they take on the Ruskies? Typhoons for CAS versus Soviet tanks are won-der-ful.

I will admit to unashamed editing of the US troop ratings. Others will not agree, that is their privelege, I figure that after fighting their way across Europe, the US forces are not greenies, not by any stretch. I examined the ratings with which the US ended their U2R campaign, used the same leg and armor types in Victors and editied them up to what the US had earned. I also used 150% search for both sides, would probaby gohigher on replay in 7.1.

Here's what I started Victors with and I believe did not have to restart - with the newer purchase values in 7.1 your points might not go quite as far, depends on a lot of parameters:

Core

1 X US HQ (you have a choice?)
5 X Pershing
5 X M4a3e8 HVSS
9 X airborne squad
6 X 30 cal MMG
3 X M2 60mm Mortar
8 X 4.5" Rocket Section (they are miraculously self-propelled, or were)
FO Jeep
Recon in the Aux

Support

4 X 4.5" Rocket Section
4 X M19 Duster (great for chewing up enemy infantry)
2 X Dodge Truck

Aux is extensive, including a Greyhound, plenty of leg Recon, HT's, "Armed" infantry, extra M9 zooks, Rangers and some offboard 105's, which engaged in a counter-battery duel with Soviet BM8 Katyushas and scored 8 hits!!

Provided your FO is good and you pour it on with the rockets, Ivan will not be as much a problem as you might think. As a result of my testing in Victors, I subsequently dropped the US 4.5" rocket sections from my U2R replays and went to onboard 105's - the rockets simply wipe out everything in the impact zone in about four or five turns. In Victors, maybe a few 4.5" units to balance Ivan, maybe not - if I were going to adapt Victors for H2H, yes. Solo versus AI, probably not many.

Good luck - and be careful out there.

No, NKT, I have not had a chance as yet to revise what I hope to be all the many scenarios and campaign battles done up to version 7.1

I will get there but it will take some time. The constant patches and improving of SPWAW has made it difficult to keep all of this up to date.

I am working on it.

My recommendation are Pershings. They are (or were) the best medicine against the Russians. I used lots of Pershings.
