Sod's law eh? At least you'll have something to do on your holiday now [:D]

Nikademus -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 2:54:00 PM)

sounds like its time for a new hard drive.

Peter Fisla -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 3:07:12 PM)

Hey Hard Sarge,

If I may ask: can you power it on ? (is power supply working at all) When you power on what do you see on the screen, does it go through the book sequence ? If nothing and assuming you have a desktop you might want to take out all the cards and put them one by one (only the minimum like video cards/ make sure hard drives are connected well) and go from there. Could be the memory as well...try taking them out and put one stick in at the time. Hard drive is not necessarily lost unless it was starting to make some weird noises before the computer went down...just some suggestions :)

harley -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 4:00:06 PM)

Again, Ron? What the hell do your dogs do to the computers when you are at work?

You've had more computer crashes in the years I've know you than Gordon Brown has had public relations fubars.

Nikademus -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 4:58:11 PM)

FYI too Sarge, your Matrix PM box is full.

not the HD, to be honest I think it is microsoft, it all started going bad with all of the vista updates , mine is a XP, i think they screwying thing up just a bit, to make it have trouble ( most of the updates don't want to install)

the Dell XPS screen comes up, get the fill box about 1/3 of the way (it is 1/3 when it pops up) and just hangs there with the fans running

I was hearing some clicks, but thought that was from the Vid Cards (that is the main issue) (or was)

can't disagree with you there, but really seemed to have bad luck with this one, crossfire vid cards were worthless, most of the crashes sound like they are linked to the vid cards

Hard Sarge -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 6:53:03 PM)

hmmmm looks like it has room :) cleaned some up

Nice to know our politics makes press in US these days... :)

Derfel -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 7:53:41 PM)

The clicking sounds you hear MIGHT be from the Harddrive trying to read a damaged sector that your OS need to boot.
If you can get into the BIOS (ESC or F1), then you have a chance to get a Linux live disk running that MIGHT repair that damaged sector.
Hopefully you have a good backup of the data that is on the disk.

A good quote in the IT Support:
Real men do not take Backup... Real men cry a lot.[8D]

edited for typos.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 9:11:13 PM)

hmmmm, I switched HDs around and I hang at the same spot, so, I not sure I even getting the HQ/OS

kid is going to take it to work in the morning, to let them look at it, then make up my mind as to what I got to do

hmmmmmm, where the hell is my extrenal drive at ? normally I can see that when I am sitting here, that is the one i need

Hard Sarge -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 9:58:22 PM)

ahhhh, funny, found it, I moved it so it was closer to the fan, to keep it cooler, where I had it, the computer blocked it off and it would get pretty hot

I hate this stuff

redownload my FTPs, got to relink all of the beta and alpha sites back to it

lol, wife driveing me nuts, can I have some meds, I gave them to you this morning, yea, i know, i want some more )

joey -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 10:09:47 PM)

Ok so it's the Dell boot sequence that fail. Have you done any hardware changes to the system recently ? Anyways try this: reboot the computer and go to bios, assuming you can get of course. Once you are in then simply re-save the configuration and exit the bios and reboot. Once it boots see if it hangs again...if yes then there could be a hardware conflict. Check if you have too much dust inside the computer, perhaps the case fans are not working well, perhaps the video card is too dusty. Make sure that CPU as the heat sink properly attached. It could be also the hard disk has failed...

Hard Sarge -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 10:28:57 PM)

Can't get to the Bios, hangs too fast

no, no changes

the inside heat has been good, got a program that watches that, the cards looked good/clean

(of course, the next one, I wanted to look into water cooling, just in case)

(only, didn't want to be looking at one this early)

(ahhhhhh, I was down to the last battle for Dragon's Age II)

You can time it...reboot the machine I keep hitting the F2 (think that's the bios key). Just keep pressing the F2 key multiple times as soon as you reboot...

Are you sure that the CPU/Video cards fans are ok ? did you check ?

Hard Sarge -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 10:47:46 PM)

naw, i tried with the F2, it is locked up before the screen shows up

it shows the fill bar at the bottom being about 1/3rd of the way filled, but it is like that as soon as the screen shows

fans were running

So you are saying that you reboot the computer, and as soon as the power goes one and you keep hitting the F2 repeatedly and yet is still won't let you go to the bios ? If that's the case then you have a hardware issue. Something major, like motherboard, cpu, power supply, video card. memory... did you try opening the case and check to make sure all the components are connected well ? You might need to disconnect and then connect a component to make sure.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (4/30/2010 11:04:03 PM)

yeap

I replaced the HD, and checked the wires and plugs, checked the mem

hmmm, you not going to let me get any sleep tonight, sounding like it may be more dead then i was hoping

I may needed you to get me some data I can use, I think all of my sites and docs are going to be down for a while

G5/AS, G6/AS, G14/AS, basic stats/dates and such (those last two looked good, but, even translated, wasn't able to pull much of what I needed)

Sorry to hear Hard Sarge...I don't bother with desktops anymore...I only use laptops now. If I really need the 3D stuff I use my PS3.

Regarding the G-6/AS and G-14/AS, my last message in the "Additional aircraft info" thread has the G-6/AS performance data chart. Check out the links at the bottom of that message. I'm actually surprised you were able to find G-5/AS performance data. The G-5/AS engine cover should look very similar to G-6/AS meaning no MG bulges like you see on standard G-6. Take a look at the G-6/AS and G-14/AS pictures in my last post...that's pretty much how G-5/AS will look like. The message also has dates, also what units has received the G-6/AS and G-14/AS. I can provide factories and serial numbers if needed.

Peter

<slap>

I'm an aussie...

We always keep an eye on the mother country.

Hard Sarge -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (5/1/2010 4:41:31 PM)

they looked at it, said the HD died, replace the HD and reinstall the OSsnf I should be good to go, picked up two HDs, get home, and the computer still don't see the HDs (get farther in then before)

I thinking it is the HD controller that is bad

joey -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (5/1/2010 8:41:05 PM)

Sounds like you are going nowhere fast!

Hard Sarge -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (5/1/2010 10:07:06 PM)

well, if we look on the brite side of things, it may, mean my HD and all my "Stuff" is still good and I will of doubled my HD size

on the bad aide side, more may be wrong then a easy fix is going to do

heck took it back and now they say, it may be two days to do the testing, before we figure out what needs to be done

kaybayray -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (5/4/2010 7:48:13 PM)

Jeez Sarge,
You go through Puters faster than I go through Shoes bro!! I am still running the last one I built back on Ought Zero. I see you running a Dell.. I highly recommed you build your own. Almost as easy and you know what you got under the hood. I have swapped out lots of components over the years and slowly upgraded to the max I can on my board. This year I will build The Next Generation with Technology from This Century... LOL... I still run my original 386 and my old Pentium 150 machine as well. Yeah, all built by me. The only one I did not build was my Apple II E. The First and Last store bought computer. Love the old "Legend" software.

Later,
KayBay

Hard Sarge -> RE: Looks like i may be done for a bit (5/4/2010 10:28:26 PM)

well, we working now

(I work by swinging a slege hammer and bending Alum forgings, not sure it is a good idea for me to try and put things together)

got to get all the junk hooked back up and running

got tons of stuff to put back in

of course, I pulled out of the drive way to go to the bank this morning, and the front right spring broke, so got the car in the shop now, replacing the springs and stuts, ahhhhhhh
