Tomozuru was not an MTB. She was a torpedo boat. The Japanese built MTBs by the hundreds, which didn't make them worthwhile. The Japanese had the worst MTBs among all the major navies. For them, the concept was an after thought. One of the driving forces behind the project was the MTB's anti-submarine capability--yes, the IJN actually thought the MTB was a promising anti-sub platform.

I think the Japs mostly used their T51 (Type A Ro-gata) MTBs for anti-sub work. They were much larger than other Japanese MTB types and could carry up to eight DCs (12 DCs if no torpedoes were carried). I don’t think most Japanese MTBs had DCs.

The Japanese also used Dutch MTBs captured at Soerabaja.

The Type 51 was inspired by German S-boats, but it was a hopeless failure. All units settled into patrol and ASW for lack of anything else. But they weren't the only IJN motor boats to carry depth charges. Pretty much any MTB could carry four depth charges. So what are the chances of killing a sub with four DCs dropped from a speeding motor boat?

Tomozuru, I agree, is NOT an IJN MTB. Different animal.

How would you fire off DC racks without Sonar equipment? How does that work exactly? I assume the MTB's didnt' have Sonar.

There is another weapons system known internationally as Optimism.
There was no active sonar in World War I, just hydrophones, but plenty of sunken subs. I don't know if the Japanese MTBs even had hydrophones.

Photographed in Tokyo Bay sometime in late 1941. She was sunk by carrier aircraft off Tarawa on 19th September 1943.

Photographed near Chiba on 11 June 1944. Probably soon after she was launched. She was found in a wrecked condition at Uraga at the end of the war.
