showboat1 -> What about World War I??? (7/24/2002 6:00:21 AM)

Has Matrix given any thought to a World War I style wargame in the PacWar/WiR style of game. The naval warfare end of things would be great if done like UV. Lots of Jutland "what ifs?"

Would indeed be great.

When will it be out? I'm already waiting.

Even something like a GNB style game on the topic would be good. Its like the lost war or something. Anybody know of any good World War I games?

There will be a WW1 game out shortly. Check out Trench by Frank Hunter at Adanac Command Studies link -> http://www.adanaccommandstudies.com/

There's a WWI surface warfare game being developed, the title is Raider Operations. It's been six months since they updated their web site, but I'm still hopeful. Their web address is http://members.tripod.com/hsr_historicalgames. Take a look.

Well, I guess everyone can see by the lack of posts that WWI truely is forgotten. The last of only five posts was six days ago.

KG Erwin -> Regarding WWI games (7/31/2002 7:44:55 AM)

What type of game do you want ? I bought the AH board game "1914", designed by Jim Dunnigan, and released in 1968. It was a groundbreaking design, but got hopelessly mired in the "siege gun" rules and all the other complexities of the game rules. The OOBs were complete, the map was functional, but the GAME didn't exist. The French 6-9-3 vs the German 7-10-4 corps units simply didn't work. The game quickly ground down to a unit v unit slugfest. Jim, to his credit, was still learning how to balance "historicity vs playability". That argument still applies to this day.

KG Erwin -> Playability vs information (7/31/2002 7:59:11 AM)

This was ALWAYS the shortcomings of James Dunnigan games. I WISH this guy had interest in designing PC games. Historical accuracy was ALWAYS paramount in Jim's games, and they're rightly regarded as classics, but given the complexities of the rules (remember War in the East circa 1974? I HAVE that, and others), they're REALLY intended (IMO) to represent the situation at given periods of the War In The East, NOT to necessarily PLAY them. Regard these games as graphic aids to display different periods of the war, NOT as playable , and you get the idea. They are historical tools, and nothing more.

JPD -> Playability vs Information (7/31/2002 9:20:01 AM)

Yes, I readily conceed that a game that is historically accurate would degenerate into the trench warfare on the Western Front, just as it did almost 90 years ago. However...the naval war was much more dicey. The "What Ifs" in this area are almost endless. What If Von Ingenohl had energetically supported Hipper on 16 Dec 1914? Would he have destroyed the Grand Fleet's 2nd BS? He had a 14 to 6 advantage in dreadnoughts. Would Beatty's BCF have been mauled trying to intervene? If the High Seas Fleet had attained parity this early in the war, what effect would that have had on Great Britain's strategy? Would they have left the BEF on the continent when the home island would have been subjected to raids the Royal Navy could not stop? How would their withdrawal effect France's ability to resist the German offensive? Would Italy remain neutral, or would they honor the treaties they signed creating the Triple Alliance? A combined K.u.K Kriegsmarine/Italian Fleet would have been more than a match for the French Mediterranean Fleet that could not be supported by the Royal Navy. I guess we want a massive strategic game that covers the entire war. Gary Grigsby has spoiled us with Pacific War.

SPI? War in the West and the expansion for both games called The War in Europe? I got to play War in the East some way back in 1984. Though it was so huge I only got to play a few turns. It belonged to my friend and we didn't have any place to put it out where we could keep it for the couple of months it would take to play it. Lucky computers don't take up much space.

Over a year ago I was asking about a WWI game. At that time Matrix was not sure a large enough market was out there to support the cost of making the game. I would like to see a grand game covering all of europe. Production, tech, air, ground, sea w/subs, diplomacy. The war did not have to turn into a trench slugfest. A lot of what if's could be played out.
I have played about every type of WWII game and would welcome WWI for a new and fresh war to play out.

I used to play the Battle of Jutland board game. I loved it. A computer adaptation would be great.
